Evening all. Uncouth = anagram of 'uh count'.

                  The anagram signifier being "down"?

                    Er, yes. That a problem?

Of course I know 'down' has another specific meaning in puzzles, but that doesn't mean it can't also be a (loose) synonym for any of broken/confused/strange/fucked up beyond recognition etc. etc.

I have to say, I don't really understand how "down" is a synonym of confused/broken etc, loosely or otherwise.

Andy - is that a follow-on from my clue? It's not the right solution if so. (To be honest, I can't work out any of the words in your clue could be a solution to mine, so maybe I've missed a joke.)

It's a right old mess now isn't it? Maybe you should repeat your clue, Hof, just so we know where we are.

OK, no problem. My working, for what it's worth, was COARSE minus the first two letters = ARSE - "(perhaps) Jack" being the definition. I took the liberty of adding the -d to the solution.

OK, they're not synonyms. They're all valid anagram indicators, then. Clearly I used 'down' for the surface reading. Do you think it's invalid as an anagram indicator? Which would be odd, given the wide range of other indicators that have been used.

I too had thought yours might be (CO)ARSE, with "Jacks" as a variant of "jacksie".

(I've not seen "down" as an anagram indicator either, I must admit.)

Ah, I see. Sorry for an unintentionally ambiguous clue. I now fear that the "wrong" answer is a better solution than the right one!

Dunc - I just don't really see how "down" indicates disorder or breakdown or re-jigging in the way that anagram indicators usually do.
