        What’s wrong with „Staunch“?

Think I have most of yours, IT but I’m damned if I know how it ends.

          It's an adjective?

          The verb is stanch?

The dictionary suggest both are possible https://www.thefreedictionary.com/staunch

I’d never encountered „Stanch“ until I opened this thread.

                Stanch and Staunch

I think of "stanch" as being more American, but YMMV

Both OED and Merriam-Webster list "staunch" as a nonstandard spelling of "stanch" don't they?

(I'll admit, I only found this out in the last week after seeing a cartoon featuring paramedics in Private Eye, or somewhere

                  But hey-ho)

                          Oh well.

When I looked it up it seemed to suggest OED had stanch going back to about 1800, and the earlier citation

But I've slept (although fitfully) since then.

I'm not sure about it. I don't think clues that involve two consecutive wordplaying actions to solve are entirely fair. I think we've concluded on here before that finding a synonym and then making an anagram of that synonym is unfair, and while this is easier (translating 10 into TEN before finding the hidden word), I still think it falls in the same area of slightly-too-much. I've never seen such a clue in a published crossword.

(Note: I guess it is possible I have seen such a clue, but have never solved it)

[per wikipedia "Chiantishire is an informal nickname given to an area of Tuscany, Italy, where many upper class British citizens have moved or usually spend their holidays."]
