Just got in to see the final whistle, ITV stats had Sporting with 20 shots but only 2 on target! Are there no fucking forwards in the whole of Portugal?
Purple with gold numerals and trim, nonetheless! I'm sure that Della Valle is already on the horn to the bishop to have him bless the pitch before the match.
And I missed the whole second half with a work emergency.
I mentioned on our podcast that Sporting wouldn't fill up their own stadium for the game and I was right. Sportinguistas should hang their heads in shame, only half filling their stadium for what was such an important game.
Bento picked the wrong team yet again. In response to the poster who asked why there are no strikers in Portugal, well there are plenty of them but no manager is willing to play a formation which involved two strikers, most prefer the lone striker up front who basically does nothing. Djallo missed a sitter but he's just come from scoring 2 at the weekend, one the week previously and is looking in great form, why oh why didn't Bento start with him.
Rangers were fantastically organised, rode their luck at took their chances when they arrived. Darchville's goal celebration was one of the best I've seen in a long time. And fair play to the Ranger's supporters, who have been in good form in Lisbon today despite the godawful weather. The apathetic Sportinguistas really don't deserve success in this competition and I'm glad they went out.
Were you watching the Getafe game on a feed? Edit: I presume not as the guardian scores say there was five minutes between the last two Bayern goals not one.
You were right steveee ... a little bit of rain and cold weather and sportinguistas go home and put their slippers on.
Rangers much the better team on the night - organised and deadly in the couple of chances they got. And yes, I agree - Bento was much too cagey. And why he sticks with Romagnoli when Pereirinha is so hungry, I don't know ... akthough the latter was very permissive for Whittaker's goal - given free run of the Sporting half to stroll through. Apart from the goal, he'd looked a bit of a joke since he came on as sub.
Moutinho looked lightweight, Liedson all at sea again, Vukcevic was hiding for most of the game, Izmailov - where's your head? Ironically, their best player was Veloso, though, who's had a so-so season. Having said that, he was partly to blame for both goals.
