Those Masis are beautiful. Except, on the non-fixie, there's Shimano gear. On (presumably) an Italian bike. WTF?!

Yeah, I've got Shimano on my Colnago. Lovely to use, but it's not right.

This barely fits on here, but I know you lot are design nuts as much as bike nuts, so...

In case you missed it when WOM mentioned it on another thread, this is representative of the new range of bikes that Ridley have made (for no discernible reason!) :

            -

            -

More models here, if you're interested, and this is their main site.

Faliero Masi sold the company to Americans in the 70s. It was owned by Schwinn at one point, but nowadays it's owned by Haro, the Californian BMX company. Like most bikes these days, they're all made in China or Taiwan.

Quite often they're made by Giant, in fact, who produce bikes for Trek, Specialized, Schwinn, and Bianchi, among others.

Alberto Masi, Faliero's son, still produces hand-made, traditional Masi frames in Milan. But because of the licensing issues, they're sold in the U.S. as Milano.

                Those Masis are nice.

I almost got a 'Kona' tourer in the cycle-to-work scheme this year that had a similar retro paint job (but in my fave sky blue).

Anyway, this dabble in cycling porn comes after puncturing two days running, yesterday in a horrible downpour, today (in the bizarre belief that it couldn't happen twice in a row) with no spare tube on board, so I limped to a N.Shields bike shop, then, since even his track pump couldn't get it hard (oo-er), I limped all the way home on a semi and am feeling disgruntled.

Real cycling to cycling porn is a bit like the relationship between real-life sex and fantasy porn, then, in some ways.

I saw a LeMond fixie in a shop yesterday, and they had some sign saying it was the last one in stock, and they weren't making any more of them. It was gorgeous.

I have Shimano gear on my early 80s Univega. I think Univega is owned by Schwinn now, but I think it was independent back then, but maybe even back then it was faux-Italian.

Today was the first day I was able to go out with just some mitts on my hands, instead of sealskinz. Cycling is just brilliant isn't it? I rode along the coast, the roads were quiet and my Colnago simply purred. I cleared my head and when I got home I had a snigger about Felicity limping home on a semi.

L'Acheteur Cycliste did a kind of steel-is-real Italian special this month, looking at bikes by Gios, Daccordi and Cinelli. Toro will be pleased to know that the Daccordi was all-Campag. Gios sneaked in some Spécialités TA, and Cinelli's beautiful frame (the XCR) was kitted out in Sram RED and some horrendously bad taste wheels. Unfortunately they don't scan well as the decent pics are all across two pages.

                      But here's the XCR frame...

I hope people don't mind me bumping this thread but I was hoping to get soem advice. I'm going to take part in the cyclescheme but I don't have a clue where to start with finding a bike.

I'd like a road bike, with gears and a freewheel. I'd like something that looks nice. I don't really want to spend more than £700 (ticket price). Should I just go for a Giant or a Specialized? Or can I find an decent Italian bike for that little money?

While I haven't cycled for 10nearly 10 years or so my commute would only be the 10k between Brixton and Bank. I'm not sure if that makes any difference but it may do I guess.

That XCR frame is rather nice... but the top tube should be closer to the horizontal.

Actually Ricky I am going to double bump it up.

As I get closer to my mid century and show no signs of getting technically better on a mountain bike (actually more the other way around on recent performances) - my mind is turning to road bikes.

I actually really like hill climbing, and to just concentrate on the hill in question rather than roots, mud, ruts, horse shit and rocks would be nice.

Plus I saw winking at me in a window in the Ardeche last week a Bianchi Via Nirone 7 - bottom of the range Triple with Shimano Sora groupset on it for 799 euros. In true Bianchi colours.
                            Which seemed a good deal.
                            But.....
Being of the opinion that part of the pleasure of these things is doing the research I resisted plus that Sora sounds like the equivient of an Altus on MTBs.

So I want a km eater that is good on hills , looks the business and doesn't have wheels that crumple at the first bump in the road, cycle ways around here do assume you have more than twiglets holding your rims together.

I will still do off roading on the full susser; but as more and more people I seem to come across who do off roading seem to think it is a BMX for tricks it is starting to tick me off.

Budget - hmmm tricky there's no way the chef d'achat will loosen the purse strings as much as for the Kona full susser ("another bike, you've already got two!' and the point is?)
                            But starting around 1000 Euros.

So narrow tyred people - what's the advise?

Giant and Specialized do good bikes in the range Ricky is talking about, as do Bianchi. Other big Italian marques start at about VTTB's range for the entry-level bikes.

They'll all be light, fast, reliable pieces of kit - but obviously, component and frame quality go up the mroe you're willing to pay.

Thanks Toro - I must admit an Italiano appeals to my snob inner - although probably the Speshes and Giant are maybe better value.
LaPierre does some good French stuff, even Btwin (D4) are getting good write ups in the frog press - but I wouldn't give the locals the satisfaction.....

Any tips for sizing? - as maybe I am wrong; but getting a good fit is probably more important for a routier than a VTTist.
Just being able to touch the floor on tippy toes probably isn't going to do, back/reaching length, angle of dangle etc too I expect.

I just leapt on my MTB in the shop and "knew" it was right - and after my behind the knee tendons blew up after a very hard 60kms trip - maybe I should have spent more time researching, on that side. Hence my desire to investigate more this time.

I saw a dummy bike set up in Poole once to tailor fit the roadies - haven't seen anything here.

Time to decend on a bike shop I think.

                                    Thanks for the advice Toro.

I'm with Boscombe here, there is something about having an Italian bike (even if it's made in China) that I find rather attractive. It also helps narrow my options down a little. I think i'm at the stage of going to a shop, talking to people and trying some bikes out but before I do I'd like to know a bit more about groupsets.

Would I notice if I had Sora components as opposed to Xenon or Mirage? My current shortlist of three (ready to be torn up when I find they don't do bikes big enough for me) is

                                    Bianchi Nirone 7 with Sora,

                                    Bianchi Nirone 7 with Xenon

                                    or

                                    Wilier Escape with Mirage

Any words of wisdom? Or should I just get myself down a shop?

                                    Finally some bike porn...

The Bianchi Dolomiti really is the Platonic form of a racing bike made real

Despite the emotional attachment to my recently-written off Bianchi 1885 (with Campagnolo Veloce), I am becoming interested in Wiliers too.

Partly cos the best local bike shop has them, and I think this time I'm gonna get properly fitted in terms of back reach, bar width etc as well as just frame height.

A good bike shop should be able to fit you for it carefully. Some will offer professional fitting services, but those are really only worth it if you're shelling out a fortune. Care and attention to your needs is really not a great deal to ask, and most bike shops will be more than happy to provide it; they realise that's the big thing they have that internet vendors can't give you.

Time For a New Bike Porn Thread

I did my first road bike trip on Sunday - 108kms Strasbourg to Mulhouse, knee tendons a bit sore, but evenly painful - pretty pleased, and enjoyed it alot.
Flat plain riding in around 4 hours , so I held my mate up a bit; but continous pedalling into a slight head wind, gave me a work out.
Borrowed a friends bike - Columbus Steel frame, Shimano 105's, Mavic Helium wheels. Amazed how quick I was into high 20's.

Took me 30kms to work out the gear shifters, logical ; but after years of rapid fires and grip shifts, they are a bit wierd, pushing the brake lever at the same time to shift down, took some getting used to.

My friend is actually selling this, for 700 euros; which I thought was a bit stiff at first ; I mean it's not even Italian, and it's a funny perlescent orange colour.
History is, it was a custom frame from some dude in the Roubaix area , and then my friend tricked it out, so i think it's in good nick, and it fits ----- still 700 Euros.

However a 108km test ride isn't bad - plus I will tackle some Vosgien hills in a couple of weeks time, as I find standing up on the pedals very strange with those narrow tyres after a VTT, and want to play around with that, and see some downhills at full whack with those tiny brakes

Funny thing is, I want to go out on my Kona bouncy beast now; just to feel the difference while it is still fresh in my mind.

I'm still waiting for the insurance cheque to replace my Bianchi, written off due to its carbon components after a car hit me.

Solicitor says they'll argue to only pay the depreciated 1-year-old value, so I'll certainly be trying to arm her with all the info about how bikes have got a lot dearer, inc Euro-pound relationship, improved components, new models etc

But I'm fucked if I'm gonna come out of this worse off, so solicitor arranged an examination by a physio/accident specialist yesterday. I laid it on a bit thick about stiffness in my hip (there is some) and also pain in my right knee after exercise*-he stuck his fingers right where it hurts and asked me about my cleats, bike etc so maybe some damages for my residual injuries will take me back up to where I can buy something decent as a replacement. I'll seek the collective wisdom of the otf peloton on what to buy when the time (the cheque) comes.

*this is real, but I've been training quite a bit (on the old Cinelli) for the N Rock Cyclone in June, so I think I've got tendonitis from pushing it/doing too much too soon.

Ah, rather predictably, my desired budget is getting pulled upwards! I was quite happy to look at just Alu/Carbon hybrids; but when you start looking at those 100% carbons beauties it's hard to keep discipline.

It is actually quite tricky to seek out Italian bikes here, yank bikes every where and I avoided on purpose Spesh, Trek, 'Dales and Scotts for MTBs, so I am not going to start looking at them for road (completely internal snobby, no sense reasons really).

French offerings are patchy, LaPierre seem the most together, Gitane are possibly interesting and Time and Look are amazingly low key here.

I did stumble across a small shop selling Pinarello and Colnago, where they had a very drool worthy Extreme Power - with no price on it (if you have to ask, you can't afford it approach I suppose) - out of my pocket money.

In my quest to understand this new world of kit, I have been even starting to understand the groupsets
                                                Shimano - 105's - equiv to Off Road's LX
                                                Ultegra - Equiv to XT
Dura Ace - Equiv to XTR
Now like in MTBs , everyone hates Shimano, but they work damn fine, and while not having this mythical click, clunk noise of Campos, are easier to maintain (according to bike shop man) and are just smoother - but they are still Shimano.

Still trying to understand the pecking order for Campos.

But the big confusion for me, is the old pedalier as they say around here - Double, or Triple or Compacts.
Coming from a triple background, to reduce the number of front rings, and get rid of the granny gear, seems a bit daring.

Any advice on the number of front rings?
                                                - it is pretty hilly close to here, 1 400m mini mountains, official tour category 2 hills, plus I only live 3 hours drive from the “real” climbs in the Alps.
But most folk seem to have doubles – maybe they are more butch than me.

Oh well, back to the research.

                                                  Campag pecking order

                                                  Xenon (least expensive)
                                                  Mirage
                                                  Veloce
                                                  Centaur
                                                  Chorus
                                                  Record (most expensive)

There's a super record (11 speed) these days and also carbon / non carbon versions of Centaur I believe. http://www.devercycles.co.uk/campagnolo.htm

Past Centaur there's little difference in the quality of the components and you're paying for snob value and to shave grams off the total weight.

I'd definitely go double. Triple's are more trouble than they're worth. If you live in a hilly area then I'd go compact for the biggest spread of gear inches as possible.

I had to give up on having an Italian bike thanks to my monstrous size. So I've plumped for a Cannondale caad9 which fits me and I can tell myself that its the same bike that Cipo rode.
