Bosch, I think you are discounting the effect that Usmaove sitting on almost a quarter of the shares has on Wenger's bosses. They can't afford to be as financially cavalier as their BRC counterparts. If things started to go south financially, it isn't at all certain that the current lock-up arrangements would survive the strain.
and apologies for spelling, I am on my laptop in front of my huge fuck off TV, with surround sound stereo, and 12 (4 left) of Peetermans, and I am typing without looking.
(So much for working class... but thats another thread.)
Are modern central defenders given pointing classes? It seems to me that after every decisive intervention the textbook response is to jog backwards ten yards while pointing particularly forcefully in the direction of where the ball has just gone.
Oh jesus christ what a miss by Adebayor. Liverpool are in the semi-finals.
Gerontophile/Ursus, have you seen the figures for Arsenal's net spending in the transfer market since 2004? It works out at an average of something like four million pounds a year. That is astoundingly low for a club of Arsenal's size. It's very laudable on its own terms, of course, but are you seriously telling me that there isn't plenty more money there for Wenger?
And as 200% has already pointed out, Man United's finances are in far worse shape than Arsenal's because of the Glazer takeover.
I didn't say that there wasn't more money. I said that there are reasons for their being more prudent than competition. Now Usmanov, before him uncertainty over the Emirates (which you may remember).
You said that Wenger was on some sort of mission to prove that he could win without spending megabucks. I'm just pointing out that there may well be other factors in the mix. I happen to also think that Wenger is more comfortable with developing younger players than with signing established stars; that's been pretty much a constant of his since Monaco.
Truth is, Arsenal the team, only have so much. And it is up to the players to do their best. If that is done, Wenger is happy, the fans seem to be happy, and I know, I am happy. 10 minutes to go to the semis... we are doing ok. we might be out, but we wont quite let go.
