    2018's country of the year

France and Croatia enjoyed final victories over each other in two of the big international ones, the football World Cup and the Davis Cup. But Belgium, who finished third at the former, have since won the World Cup of golf, and have just reached the men's Hockey World Cup final.

Any other strong contenders or events to take into consideration? The Czechs won the Fed Cup, but would really have needed the olympic ice hockey to make theirs a bumper year?

Wales. Tour de France, snooker and a European cup winner.

First rule of year-end reviews: what happened at the start of the year is worth about a tenth of what happened last month.

Norway won the Winter Olympics, as usual, but they really need to shift the event to December.
