Cheltenham had done the exact same thing a month before away at our biggest rivals for the Conference title:
It may not have been a Champions' League final, but in relative terms it was just as big. This basically led to us winning the Conference a couple of weeks later.

How was 'the Hand of God' 'overrated'?

One of those genuine "what the fuck happened there" moments. Though I'd rate Liverpool coming back from 3-0 down against AC Milan has the even bigger WTF game.

Originally posted by Sporting View PostThe role of Billie, the white horse, in clearing the crowd at the 1923 FA Cup Final is overrated. For one thing, he was grey; for another, there were other horses helping as well. But Billie gets the credit to this day.

The Roberto Carlos free kick that went in. And free kicks in general. The ball isn't moving and there's no-one trying to tackle the taker. They're only great when it's your team scoring them.
Most 'official' goals of the season. I think Trevor Sinclair won it once for one he'd scored for QPR; I'd seen him score a similar-but-better the same campaign, against Manchester City.

The moment when your side wins a corner. Despite there being a roughly 1 in 50 chance of scoring from it, the crowd give a huge roar. Followed by a bit of a sigh as your best crosser fails to clear the first defender or plops it into the keeper's arms.
And then from the clearance the speed merchant on the other side is bearing down on your goal, chased by only a full back or shortarse midfielder, as your defenders lumber back from their chance of glory...
Luckily fast players can't really finish and your keeper is able to push it out for a corner. A huge roar goes up from the away fans...

jwdd is taking it in an interesting direction, although I don't necessarily agree 100% with his summary. (This from the supporter of a team that's recently been fairly ineffective from corners.)

Over-rated should probably mean, in part, that it didn't change anything.
Hand Of God is over-rated in that sense because I think the outcome of the match and tournament were fundamentally unchanged, and there were other injustices in that game that went in England's favour (e.g. Fenwick not being sent off). It's interesting to compare the minute by minute analysis that The Guardian did on that game a few years ago with the jingoistic match coverage on Youtube. Two different games.
Italia 90 changed things in mainly negative ways, although it arguably also got rid of the backpass rule and gave us Channel 4 Football Italia.
Euro 96 was a disaster: shit tournament that gave legitimacy to football laddism. England pissed on Netherlands but just how poor and undisciplined was that Dutch squad? England were outplayed by Spain in the QF and saved by the ref, in arguably a clearer injustice than any of England's 1966 games.

That Ryan Giggs goal.
Firstly, none of the Arsenal players make a tackle worthy of the name and, secondly, David Seaman practically limbos under the shot, if he'd just stood up it would've smacked him in his moustachioed bonce.

The Hagi goal v Colombia in 1994 that was arguably a fluke and certainly a goalkeeping error.
Owairan 1994 - no tackling worthy of the name. Infact it's more like the Owen goal where it's purely the pace of the run. Ditto George Weah's slalom goal in Serie A.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 04-12-2018, 13:53.
