    Kathleen Ferrier

    #2
Kathleen Ferrier the most incredible voice and the most incredible story. left school at 14 to work for the post office, played and sang in choirs as part of the strong musical culture of the North. She was discovered when she entered a local singing contest in Carlisle at 25 and made her first radio broadcast at 27 in 1939. then started to sing on tours of factories during the War. in 1942 she met Malcolm Sargent and very rapidly became a star, singing Britten, Elgar and once she met Bruno Walter, Mahler.

She died aged 41 of breast cancer.

Here's her recording of the Kindertotenlieder

and (in tribute to the Bach thread) Erbarme Dich with Karajan
