    Boxing - rival organisations

So, Joshua is the IBF, WBA (Super) and WBO heavyweight world champion.

Wilder is WBC champion and will fight Fury in defence of that title.

Compulsive bullshitter Frank Warren says Wilder v Fury is the most important boxing match for years.

That might begin to be a credible statement if the WBC title were more significant than any of the IBF, WBA and WBO titles. Could that be argued? What is the general view in the sport of the relative importance of those four organisations?

WBC used to be the biggie but the WBA champ was often stronger. But that's going back to the 80s. Now, fuck knows.

First story on the 9 o'clock news tonight on RTE is that boxing is being thrown out of the olympics.

This was mooted on the main boxing thread and, strictly speaking, thr IOC has “frozen the planning” for Boxing in Tokyo while maintaining it will give the sport every chance to appear in 2020.

Basically it’s trying to get the AIBA to dump the Uzbeki alleged mafioso it elected as president last month.

This is a hard one to answer. The WBO seems to be the last in, so probably the least important (and certainly the least important historically). I remember hearing commentators talk about the IBF being the most impressive but maybe that was for a specific division or maybe the president at that time had his act together.

Not sure about the organisations, but the comments surely say more about boxing and particularly heavyweight boxing in America, where the crowds are moderate, and they need a fight of some significance. This fight’s somewhat interesting as it seems fairly evenly matched, but it’s nothing momentous, because either boxer could lose and remain a major player in the division.

With the plethora of champions, it's the fighter that legitimises the belt rather than the belt legitimising the fighter.
