    The incredible Ricky Jay

Ricky Jay died yesterday at 72. If you've no idea who he is, check this out...

    ...and then read this.

You've probably seen him in movies or on TV, but he's astoundingly talented at slight of hand and 'close up' magic.

He's also astoundingly secretive, and even his closest, life-long friends know very little about him.

One story I read had Penn Jillette ask him to do a card trick. So Ricky said sure, and had him choose a card from a deck. He then said "Do you have a pen?" Of course, said Jillette. "Fine, sign the card." When Jillette tried to 'click' the pen, it wouldn't work. Ricky then pulled the ink cartridge from his own pocket and handed it to Jillette.

The cartridge trick is the amazing Apollo Robbins, pickpocket extraordinaire.

I first saw Jay on The Secret Cabaret. I can watch card tricks/manipulation done forever and he was the absolute master. One of my biggest regrets is never getting to see him perform in the flesh but he was extraordinary.
