    Trade names in common use.

This may have been done before. There are a lot of trade names that have entered common usage over the years.

    Hoover
    Cup-A- Soup
    Pot Noodle
    Pop rivets
    Aqualumg
    Pop Tarts

    Gotta be dozens of others.

Nef, I assume that this was your contribution to the thread rather than addressed to me, but as it happens I did and I'm none the wiser.

I feel odd that I understand ahc. Pop (TM) is the brand behind pop rivets. Aqualung (sp) is the common phrase for underwater breathing apparatus.

Aqualung was trademarked. Jethro Tull were sued for using it as the title of their album.

Pop rivets was/is a trade name. I used to know a fellow who used to sell engineering sundries (screws, washers, all sorts) from a van for a company in the UK. He told me once that they were instructed not to use the term 'Pop' rivets as it was trademarked.

You've never seen me discover vintage Pyrex at a garage sale.

                                      Nylon
                                      Crimplene
                                      AstroTurf
                                      Perspex
                                      Plexiglas
                                      Bakelite
                                      Lucite

I feel like a bit of a dunce, but I'm still not sure what a pop rivet is. Is it only used by tradesmen, or is it something that a normal well-rounded responsible adult (i.e. not me) is supposed to know about?

A bunch of these must be UK specific

Plexiglas might just be French actually, people more often call it Perspex in the UK.

Crimplene is most likely UK-only and fairly retro at that.

We call it plexiglass as well, and did call it crimplene when that was a thing.

What are you using to fasten two sheets of thin-gauge steel together?
