Duchess of Kirkcaldy: Fictional Aristocrats in Songs

Thread title* inspired by Cry Baby Cry by The Beatles, which also contains the King and Queen of Marigold.

    Lady Jane - Rolling Stones

Exclude real persons (God Save The Queen, I'm Henry VIII I Am) and Queens who are likely to be transgender or gay, such as in (I assume) Killer Queen.

*Sometimes Kirkcaldy is misspelled in sites containing the lyrics and AFAIK Lennon could also have misspelled it.

Duchess by The Stranglers seems (paradoxically) to be a genuine example of this: the song was about a former friend of Hugh Cornwell's who claimed she had regal ancestry - but he and most of her other friends doubted this greatly. In Cornwell's case, so much so that he wrote a hit song about it.

XTC - The Mayor of Simpleton.

Not an aristocrat, but I wanted it here because it's a great song.

The Duchess of Kirkcaldy would have been the laughing stock of Debutante balls. Though any cunt who laughed would have been laughing on the wrong side of their face before long.

No, you're absolutely right. That's one of those invented lyric fillers that got stuck in my head when I was 13 and which won't shift, despite having heard the record several hundred times since.

There's probably a whole load of English folk songs that feature fictional aristocrats (which may or may not be based on real people). Lord Donald in 'Matty Groves' by Fairport Convention is another one that springs to mind.

                                        Lindisfarne’s Lady Eleanor hit (1970?).

Mentions a Lord something or other in the lyrics too, I belive.

                                          Recorded in 1970, a hit in 1972.

Despite Meet Me on the Corner having already been a sizeable hit, Lady Eleanor was the first song I'd heard by Lindisfarne - which led me to believe that they were a prog-rock band.

One of my favourite songs - Lindisfarne were also the first band I saw live when I was about 14 at The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury.
