    Your First Car

Mine was a 1956 Morris Minor. Bought it from my uncle for a tenner. Wish I had it now.

1994 1.1L Ford Fiesta, bought second hand with 80,000 miles on the clock. Finally disposed of with 140k on the clock. I don't wish I had it now.

1986 1.4L Ford Orion GL in Rosso Red. Given to me by my dad when he bought a newer model, and was offered derisory trade-in value for it.

I was 19, and it was hardly the epitome of cool, but it got me around the place and the sense of freedom was amazing.

I don't own a car these days, and don't miss it one iota.

1990 Ford Escort. The new shape, but with old engines that they were getting rid of the stock of. So basic it wasn't even L trim. Still didn't stop some scrote trying to nick it. I had it from 1996 until 2004, where it went for scrap. I bought a brand new Fabia as a replacement and it is still going strong 102,000 miles on.

1966 Plymouth Valiant (mentioned in threads passim). A scruffy but much beloved urchin of a car

1986 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6L hatchback in red. It was a fucking tank. You could fit just about anything in the boot.

It was a hand-me-down off my mum when I graduated from university in 1997. I'd learned to drive in it at 17 and took my first solo drive in it (not really solo - had the dog with me who was rather confused to be out in the car with just me but accepted it because I let her sit on the passenger seat and she could look out the window).

It lasted me 5 years before it succumbed to rust.

I cried after I traded it in. I bloody loved that car.

I can still remember the registration number.

I mean, I can't remember other things, like birthdays, but I can recall that.

A red 1978 Mk1 Ford Fiesta Popular 957cc with XR2 pepper pot wheels on it. Bought from my cousin who'd bought it from my Nan.
It was my cousin who put the pepper pots on.

1966 Chevy Nova. Beige. Was my grandmother's until she sold it to me with easy terms financing. Just $75 a month. Dad thought it would teach me to be responsible or something. LOL

This kinda boggles my little mind, but that's only because I grew up in a public transportation backwater.

I hope never to have to drive. I’ll be a weekend lift-cadger till I die with a bit of luck.

We had a Dodge Aspen - same as the Nova, but branded for Dodge - stationwagon in the late 70s. Rust bomb. Then a few years later, my brother and I got my grandma’s Aspen sedan. Not Detroit’s finest, to say the least. Stalled a lot and handled like a sled, but it fit lots of kids and had a big trunk and it was free.

The first car that was really mine was a white 1993 Mercury Topaz that had about 30k miles on it and some minor hail-damage after starting its life as a rental at the Pittsburgh airport.

My brother had a red 1991 (or maybe 1990?) Ford Tempo, which was just the Ford-branded version of the same thing but an earlier model year.

I had mine about ten years, during which time it dropped the muffler three times. By the end, it listed to the right to an unsafe degree.

1976 Volvo. Only washed one time and it wasn't by me. The dirt protects the paint, is my motto. I left it at friend's house when I went out of town and came back to find a clean car.

So you've always had a chauffeur?

As for me, I passed my driving test at the relatively late age of 23 after which I bought myself a Ford Escort. After that I had a Vauxhall Chevette which was evidently a horrible colour (I'll come to colours in a minute) and then I owned a Ford Fiesta. All three cars were at least third or fourth-hand and each had so many mechanical and other faults that the money I spent on repairs at least trebled what I had bought them for in the first place.

Now I haven't specified the model nor year of these cars simply because I have no idea. I have no knowledge or, nor interest in, cars as such. At the time they got me from Witham to Braintree and from Witham to Caernarfon, as well as a few other trips. The inside of a car engine was like (I know it's all electrical now) trying to read Sanscript. And my partial colour-blindness meant that I ended up buying horrible orangy-toned cars such as the Chevette which my then-girlfriend practically refused to be a passenger in.

If I were ever called as a witness in some court case and had to identify a particular car then apart from the most obvious (I suppose minis and Rolls would figure) I would be the despair of the lawyers and/or the accused for my inability to tell motor vehicles apart, as well as my confusion over certain colours.

I haven't driven for more than 20 years now...my partner has a car, and she enjoys driving so when we go on our hols here she's content to do this. I sort of navigate, though even with SatNav and all those things, I'm pretty crap at that as well.

I do have a bike though, which I use practically every day.

                                              A 2000 Citroen Saxo Forté 1.1.

I bloody loved that car, had it for about two years when I bought it before passing my test in April 2003. Until 2014 it was still the youngest car I'd ever owned - going from X (2000) to V (1999) to J (1993) to S (1998) to R (1998) to T (1999) vehicles. I now drive a 2002 Ford Focus.

I had a Citroen Saxo and fucking hated it. No power steering, offset pedals that gave me a pain in my legs and that oh so French removable sunroof that you stored under the back of the car.

I was glad to see the back of it after a couple of months, although the lady who bought it seemed dead chuffed with it.

My first car I felt was proper was a Renault Clio. Loved that car, it stood me in good stead on the journeys from South London and then Brighton to spend weekends with the future Mrs Eggchaser.
