    A hero of Telemark

    ... has died, aged 99.

But Joachim Ronneberg's name meant nothing to me. Kirk Douglas was the guy who defeated the Nazis. A great movie memory from childhood: so great that I never want to watch it again and discover that it wasn't all that.

Who are the people from history who were supposedly "immortalised" on screen, but were in fact less well known than actors who were in the films?

A bunch of people worked with Alan Turing in several screen portrayals, but only his name has stuck in my head.

I would struggle to name any actual participants in the D-Day landings. Eisenhower, yes - but he wasn't on the beaches. As opposed to a platoon of actors led by Tom Hanks. Same for most war movies, I guess. Stanley Baker and Michael Caine won VCs in Zulu, or maybe it was Oscars. Chief Buthelezi was in it too, I remember him. But not his ancestors.
