The question isn't whether "the Saudis" will survive.

It is whether MBS, who still isn't King, may not have pissed off his most important overseas patron, thereby making himself less useful to the whole project.

        The Onion strikes again.

As criticism mounted over the country’s alleged role in the disappearance and possible death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Trump administration reportedly urged the leaders of Saudi Arabia Friday to stick to killing random Yemeni civilians. “The potential murder of a high-profile journalist critical of their regime raises grave concerns for us, and we appeal to the leaders of Saudi Arabia to restrict their extrajudicial murders to Yemeni people who don’t have any public platform,” said President Trump, adding that the White House would not sit idly by as the Saudis caused the deaths of innocent people unless they were Yemeni children in a school bus or a group of Yemeni people attending a wedding.

Salah Muhammad al-Tubaigy, a Saudi military forensics official, is reportedly heard putting on headphones to listen to music as he begins to dismember the body, and encourages other people in the room to do the same.

According to Middle East Eye, Khashoggi was dragged from the office to Otaibi’s study next door, where Tubaigy began cutting up his body on a table while he was still alive.

This summer, Saudi Arabia promised the Trump administration $100 million for American efforts to stabilize areas in Syria liberated from the Islamic State.

That money landed in American accounts on Tuesday, the same day that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for discussions with the kingdom’s leaders about the fate of a missing Saudi dissident.

Securing the funding is a win for President Trump, who has complained about how much the United States spends abroad and has tried to get allies to foot more of the bill. But the timing of the money’s arrival raised eyebrows even among some of the bureaucrats whose programs will benefit from the influx of cash.

“The timing of this is no coincidence,” said an American official involved in Syria policy who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to speak to journalists. The official confirmed that the money arrived on Tuesday.

I hadn't realised that one of the main reasons why MBS was elevated was because - according to the New Yorker's Dexter Filkins - was the US (AKA Kushner) had identified him as their guy to 'modernise' and preserve the Saudi Monarchy as one of their twin pillars of Middle East policy with Israel against Iran.

They see themselves as a pair of Disney princes.

I do wonder what the Israelis think of all this. They have to be livid with MBS for screwing up their brilliant plan.

Of Course we did it- How the Saudis might defend themselves Harlan Ullman writes in a Pakistani Paper

During the Cold War, you Americans supported any government, no matter how ruthless, if they sided against the Soviets. Iran under the Shah used SAVAK to imprision, torture and kill any opposition. That was never a problem.

“You allowed autocratic states to join NATO. Assassinations and renditions have been used by your CIA going back to the 1950’s. You were responsible for overthrowing Mohammed Mosadegh in Tehran in the ’50’s; Patrice Lumumba in the Congo in 1960 and his subsequent assassination in 1961; Ngo Dinh Diem South Vietnam’s president in 1963; attempts to kill Castro in which you even tried to engage the Mafia to help; and eliminating Qaddafi in 2011.

Sorry, posting on wee phone after too many Helles. “and then Trump” that was meant to read. That whatever justification MBS gives he will be thrown under a bus, even by Trump when expedient, and someone new and exciting will emerge from the sewer of the House of Saud.

I think the double standards concerning Yemen is a more direct point without needing to go back to the Cold War or even 9/11 involvement, partly because Yemen is another MBS project.

It seems that MBS had been buttering up liberals as well as neocons and Trumpers: he has been greeted by the Clintons, Oprah, Morgan Freeman etc. All this after the Yemen genocide was well known. Yet this week you have the absurdity of Nadal and Djokovic being criticized for not cancelling a tennis match in Saudi, even though the Saudis played in the World Cup with nobody in the mainstream media mentioning Yemen.

And of course HRC sold the Saudis the planes they have been using:

                                        More on Yemen/ Saudi Arabia

When Yemeni civilians are killed it is often by British-supplied bombs and missiles dropped from British-built planes flown by British-trained pilots, and with maintenance provided on the ground by British technicians. These planes comprise around half of the Royal Saudi Air Force’s combat jets, with the United States supplying the remainder. Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former CIA analyst, said in 2016 that ‘if the United States of America and the United Kingdom tonight told King Salman that this war has to end, it would end tomorrow, because the Royal Saudi Air Force cannot operate without American and British support’.

Saudi authorities have admitted he was killed in the consulate in what they describe as a fight - so that should put an end to the controversy once and for all.

Hey Abdurrahman. Remember this morning you told me that I was being ridiculous by packing a bonesaw when the 15 of us were flying to Turkey to help that nice man with his simple paperwork? See how useful it turned out to be? Be prepared, that's what I always say

Perhaps he saw the bone saw that the guy just happened to have on him, assumed they meant him harm, and it quickly turned nasty. It’s easy how little things like that can be misconstrued.
