That's a bit sad. There was a newspaper exclusive of him stacking shelves in a supermarket long after his Rainbow days. Which was also sad. -
I think Hayes also worked as a cabbie for some years after Rainbow. His 'reinvention' as a student cult character - thanks in part to Lee and Herring's patronage - at least saw him back on TV briefly. (He apparently also appeared as a guest on NMTB, but I can't say as I recall that.)
Think I was most surprised to learn that he was 76. But then again, I suppose he would've been...Comment
