    College Football 2018

Couldn't think of a punny/witty title. Dreading that Ohio State or the usual SEC/ACC suspects (Clemson) will likely dominate again.

Barry Switzer has to be smiling. Should have just kept running the ball.

    PLAYS
    Army 87
    OU 40

    TIME OF POSSESSION
    Army 44:41
    OU 15:19

Oregon really went out of their way to lose the Junior University last night.

Is Rutgers the worst team the history of the Big Ten?

Sadly, Rutgers/Nebraska is not on the schedule this year.

          They’re better than Rutgers.

And given what UT has done, they may be better than USC and TCU

            Oh yes they are.

Still despise the UT football program, but I'm a big fan of Sam Ehlinger, their Soph QB. Yesterday he continued playing as "Tebow Jr." and plowed his way to 3 rushing tds and threw for 2. Despite an impressive 21 pt. comeback for OU to tie it up, the Longhorns totally deserved the victory.

More urgent calls for Riley to fire Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops. He's incredibly conservative and seems incapable of making adjustments w/in the game. The defensive players have some talent, but screw up time and again on the fundamentals of tackling.

The Oakland A's are surely hoping that now Kyler Murray hangs it up for the season.

UCLA are 0-5, but last night's game against Washington was their best performance yet. They're starting to put it together. Their schedule hasn't helped them at all--their opponents have a combined 25-2 record. They've lost to some good teams.

I like the looks of your frosh QB and there are some talented wide receivers. The Bruins don't have an easy game the rest of the way, but a win could certainly be a spoiler for their opponents.

Alabama/Georgia should play best two of three for the title and lay off the mortals.

It is certainly going that way.

An undefeated Notre Dame will get the sportswriters all giddy. Ohio State should finish the regular season w/ out a loss.

If those are the final four then I will have about 12 football-free hours in January.

Pretty damning story on the Pac-12's officiating credibility:

On the final play of the third quarter of Washington State’s game at USC on Sept. 21, Trojan quarterback JT Daniels scrambled and ducked to a knee. After he’d established himself as down, Washington State linebacker Logan Tago dove at him headfirst and initiated clear helmet-to-helmet contact. The play drew both a flag for roughing the passer and a review for targeting.

It was a clear enough call that both the in-stadium replay officials and the replay officials in the Pac-12’s command center in San Francisco ruled the play as a targeting penalty, according to an internal replay report obtained by Yahoo Sports. This call would have ejected Tago from the game. An independent veteran official who viewed the play also told Yahoo Sports it was “clear targeting.”

Targeting wasn’t called and Tago stayed in the game. The replay report obtained by Yahoo Sports states that “unfortunately a third party did not agree” with the call. That “third party” was Pac-12 general counsel and senior vice president of business affairs Woodie Dixon, Yahoo Sports sources have confirmed.

Dixon oversees football for the conference but is not a formally trained official. Dixon telephoned in his opinion that the play wasn’t targeting, sources said. According to the report, his opinion overruled both the trained officials in the stadium replay booth and in the league’s command center.

Only just catching up on last weekend, as I was away. Thought LSU would have stayed in contention longer but they blew it badly last week.

I'm still a novice here but will Notre Dame's (lack of) strength of schedule not pretty much rule them out of a top four ranking at the end of the season? I think the only ranked team they've played all year is Stanford, and they've no big hitters still to play?

If Notre Dame go undefeated, they will definitely be in the playoff. Their schedule may seem easy given the absence of SEC teams and relative down years for the likes of Michigan, Florida State and USC, but they still retain some of their once-over powering aura and national fanbase.

Had missed that they had played Michigan at the start of the season, admittedly.

LSU are one weird ass football team.

And not only because they are paying an assistant coach USD 2.5 million a year.

Cal had the nice throwbacks, at least one positive.

Cal’s offense is not good, but UCLA showing up that defense and laying on a blowout in Berkeley, where we almost never win, even when we have good teams, was very impressive. I feel like it was a combo of the team finally putting everything together, and also trying to make a statement after the 0-5 start. Cal just unfortunate to be the team to face them in that situation.

Oh yeah, I think Cal's made a tradition out of wearing throwbacks vs UCLA. I believe UCLA at home is almost always the Joe Roth Game, in honour of a Heisman-level Cal QB who died in 1977 aged 22 from skin cancer.

I'm friends with Jack Clark, the Papa Bear of Cal rugby, on Facebook and he always mentions it as he played with Joe Roth. I'm pretty sure he was one of the teammates in the oft-told story of Roth wanting to die in his own bed, so his teammates carried him up the stairs to his third-floor apartment and then carried his body back down a few days later.

                                        This is correct.

The Joe Roth Game is always at home against whichever of the LA schools is scheduled to visit Strawberry Canyon that season. The game has been going on for a decade or so; the throwback tradition is much newer, but I do hope it sticks.

Yeah, my first Cal game - I had a season ticket for Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch's senior year* - was against UCLA and there was no mention of Joe Roth at all.

                                          * Because I used to go to the Cal rugby summer camps, which is how I know Jack Clark, they put me on a mailing list and offered me a season ticket to every game, barring Stanford, for like $69. So I got to watch a Top 5 team with two future Hall of Famers for peanuts. It was great. I even had rights to purchase for Stanford, but it would have cost more than the season ticket (and Stanford were god-awful then anyway).

Two touchdown underdog up by four touchdowns w/ two minutes to go. 49-21 Purdue.

We find a way to lose to Temple and Indiana in the same season, and apparently playing defense has been deemed a socialist act in the Big 12.
