No surprise that Rory Burns has got the nod; his run of form for new County Champions Surrey has coincided well with Cook's retirement. Let's hope he's given a fair crack of the whip.

Also pleased to see Norfolk's Olly Stone get called up for England, having played his way up through the age groups and Minor Counties.

The feeling of "Cook is missing" is strong

It's interesting how Adil Rashid's place could conceivably been under threat at the end of the India series if it was not for That Ball. But then again, that's what leg spinners do.

Will any of the ODI only picks (Wood, Plunkett) get added to the Test squad if they have a storming series and there are doubts about Jimmy lasting three Tests in that heat?

Plunkett won't - he's only there for the last two ODIs as he's inexplicably scheduled his wedding during the series.

More likely the batsmen than the bowlers. Judging by Sri Lanka's series against South Africa, Anderson needn't worry himself about long days out in the field.

Strauss, who was on a career break, confirms he has stepped down as Director of Cricket now to spend more time with his family as his wife is being treated for cancer. Best wishes to them all.

The BBC have announced that Stars of Test Match Special will present a new, interactive cricket show during England's tour of Sri Lanka...streamed on the BBC Sport website and app... and will complement the popular live text service... and will allow fans to get directly involved with the coverage. I can't begin to really understand what that all actually means.

I started to read the press release about Talkradio's plans for their actual live coverage but saw Darren Gough's name and lost the will to live.

The second game is also in Dambulla on the 13th so they could put the first one back to the 11th or 12th in theory

Five ODIs is also too many, obviously, but probably the only way the tour could make any money.

My brother was thinking of going, but when I reminded him of the weather (we spent a year there as kids in the 70s), rebooked his holiday for Sarajevo

The ICC appears to have forgotten how cricket works:

"A kit clash with Sri Lanka means the ICC have asked us to wear our red IT20 kit for this series rather than our usual ODI kit."

Lanka should have started with spin. This seam attack looks deeply average, Malinga, though not looking quite so roly poly as he has done recently is still just a shadow of the bowler he once was. He has developed a distinct stutter in his run up that causes him to lose a lot of momentum as he approaches the gather phase.

I may have mentioned this before, but Malinga is a Dutch - specifically Friesian - name. When the Lankans came to our club to play two ODI's against Oranje, one of my friends told Malinga all the Friesian jokes he knew. (The Dutch tell jokes about Friesians being stupid country bumpkins. Generally extremely lame, as is the way with that kind of joke. "Did you hear about the Friesian who broke his ankles trying to make coconut wine?" - that sort of thing). So Malinga just stands their looking perplexed, and my friend thinks Malinga doesn't appreciate his ancestry being abused and slinks off shame faced. Only later that day did he learn that Malinga didn't speak a word of English.

He has mastered some stock cliches for post-match interviews though- the lads done great/ sickened like parrots/ well bowled Murali etc

Yeah, I think he went on a crash 'English language and use of sporting cliches' course around the time that the IPL started.

Sri Lanka seem to to have become a mess in one-dayers, whereas England are flying.

                                  Malinga is still pretty good.

As is Woakes! The two Warwickshire bowlers have SL four down inside the first ten overs.

England rest Morgan, Woakes and Stone, with the series won. Bairstow still injured.
Sri Lanka have cruised to a century opening stand against Wood, Plunkett and both Currans.

Stokes really does have anger management issues.
