Even though my own lot moved borough within Glasgow over a century from Partick to Maryhill, they're only slightly closer to Maryhill railway station (1.62 miles) than they are to Partick station (1.73).

The Hawthorns is entirely- but only just, less than 100m- outside the Birmingham City Council area.

King George's Field in Tolworth, which in a best-case scenario might become our permanent home, is 3.4 miles from the centre of Kingston.

Red Bull Arena (home of the "New York" franchise of the Crap Energy Drink empire) is 11.6 miles from Times Square per Google Maps walking distance

However, Google has failed to realise that it is illegal to walk through the Lincoln Tunnel. Going via the George Washington Bridge (which is the only way to cross the Hudson on foot) makes the journey 26 miles even.

Am I wrong in thinking they don't consider themselves from Birmingham though?

Plymouth Argyle's reserve team is in the pyramid - they're in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division which is step 6. They play their home games at the Devon FA headquarters at Newton Abbot, which is 29.9 miles from Plymouth.

If we're opening it up, TSG Hoffenheim's stadium is 3.8 miles from the centre of Hoffenheim.

And if we're allowing other sports, UCLA's football team play 21 miles from UCLA's campus.

Actually, opening up the USA for this sort of thing would be a can of worms.

Or it could just illustrate how differently we experience top level sport in this country.

Who's the closest? Slap bang in the middle of the town / city centre?

Either St. James Parks would be in the top ten.

If we're going on main stations then you'd struggle to beat Crewe at 0.3 miles by Google Maps walking, and even less as the crow flies.

Newport’s ground is 0.6 miles away. I’m surprised it’s that far but I see Google’s arbitrary centre of Newport to be on a hill behind the city centre.

I don’t know how best to determine Port Vale’s distance. Are they a Stoke-on-Trent club (3.8 miles) or a Burslem one (0.4)?

I was thinking more of the ambiguities in locales, centres etc - but anyway, to set some markers down....

Long - San Francisco 49ers, 43.7 miles from San Francisco City Hall.
Short - Minnesota Vikings, 0.4 miles from Minneapolis City Hall - but they aren't the Minneapolis Vikings of course.

Ipswich is also 0.3 miles. View from outside the station:

The New York Stadium is close to both the town centre and the railway station.

The Niners are going to be hard to beat.

They play in a different city and a different county that does not share a border with San Francisco. Of course, both "New York" teams play in a different state.

No, you are not. Sandwell (including West Bromwich) is part of the Black Country.

On the other hand, if one uses major railway stations, the Knicks, Rangers and Nets all play on top of one.

Germany definitely likes to stick stadiums out of the way - the Allianz Arena is over 7 miles out of Munich, Hamburg's stadium over 5. Manchester City kind of got lucky with a new-build given there was a ton of wasteland in central Manchester, 1.4 miles from Piccadilly.

Bruins and Celtics too, if North Station is deemed suitably major.

Now only commuter service, but I would allow it, especially as it had significant inter-city service when the original arena was built.

Yes, technically. Just like technically Brighton and Hove, Bournemouth and Boscombe and Manchester and Salford are separate but joined up places. However all of them might as well accept the truth, as Buda and Pest did many years ago - the joined-upness has turned them from two towns into one.
