With all but one of the captains' picks confirmed, time to start looking forward to this. Jim Furyk surprised few in selecting Woods and Mickelson for his team (they were, actually, 10th and 11th on the US qualifying list anyway). Thomas Bjorn has had a harder decision on experience v form; his automatic qualifiers included five rookies, and he's ignored the very real claims of a couple of other young candidates by plumping for Ryder Cup stalwarts Poulter, Casey, Stenson and Garcia. This is a bolder choice than it sounds - Stenson's been injured all summer and at the moment Sergio couldn't beat me. Europe haven't lost at home in 25 years but this year face arguably the strongest USA side assembled since the 1970s. Can't wait!

I’m there for the duration with three mates. Not sure it will live up to our Gleneagles 2014 experience as, like Rogin, I fear the disparity between the strengths of the USA and European teams give the former a great chance of victory.
Just being at the Ryder Cup is wonderful though and hugely looking forward to it. Also, France is rapidly turning in to my favourite sporting venue following Le Tour and Euro 2016.Last edited by Ray de Galles; 01-10-2018, 16:36.

Losing two matches on the 18th is a body blow Europe may not recover from. No surprise that Molinari and Fleetwoid were our sole winners, they both looked solid all round. Disappointed with Rose, a shadow of his recent form in the states. Europe need 3 points this afternoon.

UU-rup from the mouths of pissed up Brits is such an ugly sporting chant for a beautiful continent Still, I wish I was there, and there's probably a lot of very nice Brits there too.
An excellent afternoon. I hope Europe stuff them. But I really like Jim Furyk. So I hope they stuff them in a close, exciting manner.

By the way, if you want to test your marriage, playing alternate shot foursomes like this with your spouse as your partner is a good way to do it. It's a brutal format, where you're left trying to fix your partner's fuck-ups.

There’s a piece on ESPN saying the US routinely picks the wrong players for the course and worries too much about getting the right pairings based on agreement on what ball they both like. FFS. I don’t know or care, but that does seem like the kind of stupidity our country is known for.

Originally posted by Janik View PostWell, that was unexpected. Maybe, in two years time, the USA can demand to play only GB&NI again as a way of staving off declining interest from too many results going to the same side?
Add to that, the Americans have courses lined up until 2036 to host it despite their travails and European countries/cities/courses are queuing up to throw money at the chance of being their continent’s location post 2022.
There was certainly a huge home field advantage this week in the way the course was set up as well as the old story of American golfers (like a lot of their sportsmen countrymen) struggling to get to grips with international team sport.
I’m not sure if the choices for the USA team were that significant (even if players like Woods and Mickelson stunk the place out) - I’d genuinely like to know who they left out that is likely to have done any better.
Even a relatively one-sided overall contest throws up many fantastic matches throughout the weekend and the Ryder Cups I’ve attended have been some of the most absorbing and enjoyable sporting events I’ve ever been to.
