Roy Hodgson didn't have a problem with it.

“It’s one of those things. We were pushing to get an equaliser, playing quite well, looking reasonably likely to get a goal and were asking questions of the Liverpool defence, but then from a ball lumped forward we didn’t win the header and we were light at the back.

“Aaron did his level best to try and get back in and stop Salah from going free with the goalkeeper. He definitely touches him so there’s no question it was a sending off, but I don’t think he was looking to clip his heels – he was genuinely trying to get his foot on the ball but didn’t succeed. As a result he caught the player and the referee was right to send him off.”

Yeah, I thought his comments in the Sky post-match interview were prety close to my own thoughts.

Having now seen the penalty now, Salah clearly hit the deck of his own volition in both the major incidents of the match which is disappointing from a player I love to watch. I didn’t see any of Liverpool’s game last week but is he still struggling for sharpness after the injury last season and poor World Cup?

        Kudos, so refreshing from Hodgson.

'clearly' - no not clearly at all. If you are sprinting full pace and some stumbles into the back of your legs like for the red card incident, you are going to be knocked over. Which was exactly what happened. There was no dive there whatsoever to my eyes.

I didn't see it but Salah definitely cheated on both occasions. Exactly the sort of behaviour you'd expect from a mate of Ramzan Kadyrov.

The man can run a pub and fill the void created by Wenger's retirement at the same time.

We are in the presence of greatness.

Good to have you back posting by the way - you seemed to go missing for most of last season.
Ta Les. I see we've got a new non-league side in Liverpool, Lower Breck.

It's the most non-league clubs I've seen in the city ever.

Regarding the Hodgson quote above, I thought that (at least under World Cup directives) a foul had to be deliberate to incur a straight red, assuming the defender had not already received a yellow? IIRC we queried the directive because it's too easy for a defender to make it look accidental (as per Ramos in the CL final).

I did wonder the same and the directive preceded the World Cup ( see Phil Jones in the Cup Final).

What Hodgson thought and said, and what the ref thought and did, are two different things though. Maybe Hodgson's comments aren't so innocent and guileless after all if the angle is not what the ref did but whether a subsequent ban for the player is justified? Just musing out loud...

Yeah, really close to Anfield - a double header should possible when the Reds have a 12:30 k.o.

I watched Lower Breck last season on a day when Liverpool were at home. Anfield Sports Centre charges £7 for parking on these days, but not if you say you've come for the Lower Breck game.

The double jeopardy thing only applies to penalties. The rules for a foul outside the box were unaltered, anything that denies a goal scoring opportunity is still a straight red.

                                      Ah, of course. Thanks, Janik.

"How the fuck are the receipts for the car park so low, it must have been full for the liverpool game?"

"Weird thing, about three quarters of drivers had come to watch Lower Breck. I know, I thought it was strange too, I guess the rampant commercialism of the premier league really is driving fans to seek a more down to earth experience at non league level... why are you looking at me like that, boss?"

Makes me think of that story Elis James told on the Quickly Kevin podcast about loads of people using their NUS discounts at the Vetch even after they've finished their studies... or in some cases, never started them.

I paid into the kids gate at Anfield until I was 25. Got stopped at the Widzew Lodz European Cup QF by an over eager copper who had spotted me coming out of The Albert.
