Half an hour in, this looks like a two spinner track. As a general rule if it seams it spins.

Is this the return of TPC?

He was unlucky, but India's bowling has been rather more dangerous since lunch.

And another, Malan departs meaning England are 112/3... the good start just beginning to unravel a little.

Stupid idea starting a Test on a Wednesday – why would you gamble on buying tickets for Saturday.

India have been good since lunch, constantly challenging the batsmen – they should be aiming to take a grip on this game, rather than just remaining in touch.

Saturday sales seem OK but I wonder if 5 Tests are too many if the series turns out one-sided either way, especially as the Pakistan series had too few Tests. It is gambling on the series being competitive.

Wednesday starts are presumably so they can get 5 Tests into a reduced window of weeks with sufficient rest in between. I assume they've done surveys to gauge spectator preferences for Wed-Sun v Thu-Mon v Fri-Tues rather than just gone into it blind, but who knows? Shortfall in sales is definitely bad for today then there's the issue of the football season drawing away attention later. Would have made far more sense to start the series straight after the (football) World Cup two weeks ago.

Agree with that – I have no problem with four match series, that's plenty enough twists and turns.

Root, who I think will never be an all-time great, is run out on a suicidal second by a direct hit by Virat Kholi. Could be a big opportunity for a formidable innings lost for England

Unfortunate for him as it seems like it was Bairstow's call and yet another score of >50 <100 he seems destined to keep doing this

And Bairstow goes now. Piss poor from England and that dressing room will be interesting.

Stokes goes. Really poor game management, you could say, from England.

I see England are still playing the same test they've been stuck in for the past two years.

Here's an alternative. Play the Tests as a triangular series of 6 matches with all 3 teams playing 4 times

That would have worked brilliantly this summer, too. PK v India would have been a huge crowd-puller.

That was tried in 1912 when Australia and South Africa both visited England, although on that occasion 9 matches were scheduled. Crowds were poor, not helped by the weather (1912 is one of the worst summers since records began; it was the coldest and wettest August of the 20th century).

One of England's key problems is that many of their selection-safe 'untouchable' players (Cook, Stokes, Broad, Anderson etc.) only perform spasmodically. This puts a lot of pressure on the good but as yet not fully established players, (Jennings, Malan, Ali etc).

Secondly supporters of county cricket have been complaining about the selection of Rashid, but they have to ask themselves why there are no obvious spin candidates coming through their system, why really fast youngsters become 83 mph dobbers by age 25, and most of our best new batsmen are South African. England's coaching system is just not producing the goods.
