    Stig of the Grave

Clive King dies. Stig of the Dump was one of my favourite books as a child. Cheers, Clive.

Oh, seconded. When I was making my first steps into "proper" books I remember this being one of the first I got all the way through. I went back to it at least once too. Very evocative to a young mind, and still a good read now I imagine.

RIP and thanks for the memories.

That last chapter when Barney goes back at midsummer and finds Stig with his family is some of the most beautiful writing ever.

If I could find my well thumbed copy on my bookshelf I'd read it again now. Alongside Danny, Champion of the World my favourite read as a kid.

And what Sits and ad hoc have said.

Memorably illustrated by Edward Ardizzone, whose name I wouldn't have known without following the Stig links, but the style is instantly recognizable. The list of books in that Wikipedia entry is sure to include a few familiar titles from countless childhoods.
