    Elvis Costello

Elvis has cancelled the remainder of his European tour.

"Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said, 'You should start playing the Lotto'. He had rarely, if ever, seen such a small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy that could be defeated by a single surgery. I was elated and relieved that our European summer tour could go ahead. The spirit has been more than willing but I have to now accept that it is going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength. Therefore, I must reluctantly cancel all the remaining engagements of this tour."

I saw him last night in Soestdijk and he was very good.

The first time I saw him. I missed the last bus home and had to ring my dad to come and pick me up. Last night, I couldn't be arsed getting the bus so rang my son and asked him to come and pick me up. Elvis was brilliant on both occasions. Le plus ca change and all that.

We've seen him 5 or 6 times over the years. Always excellent, and genuinely seems pleased you turned up for the show. Mrs WOM has gone from 'he's okay...' to a true fan since seeing him.

In fairness I think it was worthy of a second post.

Heard the news this evening (‘Deep Dark Truthful Mirror’ had been my earworm since the morning coincidentally enough) and still shocked.

I went to see him at Love Supreme festival last Saturday and while he obviously wasn’t on top personal form and played a shortened set he was excellent. Factor in that he was gigging at all AFTER CANCER SURGERY at 63 years old is astounding.

He’s always been a hero of mine, even more so now.

Best wishes to the best songwriter of my time. He has made at least 10 albums down the years that gave me great pleasure. Soundtrack of much of my life.

Perhaps his most important contribution was his production of The Specials' album, which is easily one of the top 10 or 5 best ever British pop albums.

That sounds like a fairly positive prognosis, which is good.

Also was a producer on East Side Story and was his suggestion that Paul Carrack should take the lead vocal on Tempted

                                That was a great suggestion.

I’m sorry that he’s ill and hope he recovers.

Yep, ditto - thankfully sounds like he has it in check. Great, versatile songwriter of our times.

"This Year's Girl" re-done as a duet for the opening credits of The Deuce. I like it.

Listening to it now. The section on "Shot With His Own Gun" (from 16:00) is amazing.

Just seen him tonight in Fort Lauderdale and enjoyed him very much. His voice is in fine shape and he has added two excellent harmony singers to augment the sound. The focus was the 'Trust' album, with 5 tracks all rearranged to be as loud and raucous as possible. 'Watching The Detectives' had a long guitar solo with much distortion. The one drawback was his patter, where he adopted the persona of an American narrator, like someone doing a film noir voiceover. He couldn't just be himself, which was a shame, I felt. 'Oliver's Army' was omitted, as I suspected would happen beforehand, but 'What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding' was accompanied by strong anti-war graphics so he got the message across in that way.

He has a show in preparation called 'A Face In The Crowd', based on a Budd Sculberg novel, but I thought the numbers he played from it were weak and pompous.

Best track of the night was 'Lover's Walk' done as a swamp boogie with full-on Bo Diddley riffs and amazing drums by Pete Thomas, even though he looks about 80.

Last year, he played Oliver's Army but changed the line " one more wiggle, one less white nigger". Can't remember what he changed it into.

OA was the Alliance Party's theme song in the 1979 General Election
