Well it's not exactly clear what the alternative to staying in NAFTA is? It's not easy to see how Mexico would benefit from losing access to the US market, particularly in an unplanned and chaotic way. I also have to see a convincing argument for moving away free trade, that doesn't basically boil down to "we want to completely distort the whole economy to marginally benefit a small number of politically connected people, or a favoured industry, at the expense of everyone else in the economy, particularly the huge number of people who work in export industries.".
I really hope this works out well. I like some of the cut of his jib, but always I can't get away from the issue of him being the President of Mexico, and you have to be a right bastard to become president of Mexico. The problems he faces will take generations to fix and decades to start responding to the appropriate measures. His internal opponents are appalling people, and they will all be out to get him. Fighting them won't be easy. I hope it doesn't go all hugo chavez. Because that started promisingly.
