The others have all forgotten that it's Lawn Tennis

Right, so people were calling for a Wimbledon thread. So lets start from qualifying for this one, which isn't even the start as pre-qualifying has already happened. Etienne summarised the doings of that on the rolling thread, but the headline news was Dan Evans made it through to take his place in the actual qualifiers. Which was just about as expected. Lloyd Glasspool, Freya Christie and Samantha Murray also claimed spots via these, in addition to discretionary wild cards which were handed to Jack Draper, George Loffhagen, Anton Matusevich, Adrian McHugh, Alex Ward and James Ward for the Men's and Holly Fischer, Francesca Jones, Maia Lumsden and Emma Raducanu and one TBC for the Women's. There are also a couple that have gone to last years Junior champions, neither of whom are British.

The Men's q-draw is already underway. As last year, British Eurosport 2 are doing live coverage from one of the courts. This is what the varios Brits need to win through to get to the main show:-

So in theory all eight can make it through. High hopes that Evans will, if he can negotiate a tricky R1 encounter with Ivashka, who recently made the Semis in the Nottingham challenger before losing to De Minaur. Just like Evans did in the final. De Minaur, btw, was initially announced as a main draw wild card but that has now disappeared. Presumably he has got in anyway as an alternate.

Two of those highlighted in bold above are already playing - Alex Ward and George Loffhagen. Ward is a break down in set one, but Loffhagen is a break up on Jurgen Zopp. Second on will be Evans and McHugh, with Glasspool, Draper and Matusevich due up third on their courts. James Ward has the all-day wait as his match is the fourth scheduled.

2 wins from 4 so far, as Evans and A.Ward progress to R2 but Loffhagen and McHugh go out. draper, Glasspool and Matusevich are all currently on court, with Glasspool on serve in the first set and the other two a set down (a set and a break in Draper's case).

Loffhagen served for the first set, but it all went downhill from then. The others all performed respectably against highly ranked opponents - McHugh must have felt he had the best chance against a guy who only got in on a WC as the juniors champion from last year, but he couldn't make it count.

Glasspool has won the first set.

And Glasspool has also won the second by the same score (7-5). James Ward is a set up in his match, and on serve in the second. There is a chance that all the kids will lose, and all the more experienced players win!

Women's q-draw is out. The final wild card has gone to Tara Moore.

Interesting that all four of the experienced players won and all four of the kids lost (in straight sets). I'm sure they have potential but to me the juniors was the place to show it - these were wasted spots that should have gone to people in the pre quailes who had more chance of making the main event, and I feel particularly sorry for those with the misfortune to end up in Evo's half.

Evans v Young will be interesting if they both win on Weds

I feel sorry for those paired with Evans but the problem there was the idiocy of denying him a wild card not giving cards to juniors which is an investment in the future.

                T. Zidansek (1) vs F. CHRSTIE
                H. FISCHER vs A. Dulgheru (16)
                N. Gibbs (5) vs F. JONES
                A. Raina vs M. LUMSDEN
                S. MURRAY vs V. DIATCHENKO (21)
                T. MOORE vs I Bara
                E. RADUCANU vs B. Stefkova

Although not as promising as the men's draws, particularly with 4 seeds, it is not as unpromising as it may first seem. Zidansek has only played one pro grass match (here last year) and lost easily. Stefkova is ranked 727, being on a long comeback presumably from injury, Raina has been playing the UK grass tournaments but has lost all of them this year while Bara, like Zidansek, has only played once on grass at Wimbledon last year and is still seeking her first set. Diatchenko's record on grass is mediocre, and she retired from her match last week. That said, 2 wins for the Britons would be a good result.

Fischer loses 0&1. Definite mistake to give her a wild card, she's prodigiously talented, but has barely played all year.
Christie loses 3&3, respectable against the top seed
The astonishing Fran Jones started really well and served at *4-3 in the first set, but Nicole Gibbs was too good after that and won 4&2
Raducanu is giving it a good go against Stefkova, on serve in the second set after losing 6-4 in the first.
Sam Murray has lost the first set 6-1.

Over in Roehampton, what is happening?

Well, Dan Evans lost heavily and somewhat surprisingly to Matthias Bachinger in q2 yesterday evening. 0&3. I guess he will blame tiredness, having been forced to play three pre-qualifying matches at the back end of last week and then another in the qualies. Though twice in a day over best-of-three isn't exactly unheard of for pro Tennis players (weather affected tournaments) and there were two days to recover before the qualies started making it a not terribly onerous five 3-set matches in six days, or about the same as an ATP250 would demand of a player. There is a Brit into final qualifying though as James Ward beat Bjorn Fratangelo 4&4. Ward will face off with Benjamin Bonzi of France for a place in the main draw, but both get a day off to rest first as the Men's final q is all tomorrow. An extra day is a good idea, seeing as that is played as a best-of-five.

Going on today is the second round of the Women's qualies, and the second round of the Men's and first round of the Women's Doubles ones, Wimbledon being unique in the Slams in running Doubles qualifying tournaments. 16 pairs are going for 4 spots in these. Wild cards for two pairs were available per draw, Corrie/Glasspool and McHugh/Willis taking the Men's and Grey/Nicholls taking one of the Women's with the other going to Bouchard/Dolehide. McHugh/Willis lost to #4 Krajicek/Nedunchezhiyan in q1, with that pair now taking on Corrie/Glasspool today (in fact literally now, they have recently lost set one on a tie-break). Grey/Nicholls q1 match against #4 Garcia Perez/Stollar follows immediately after on Court 16.

Oh, and seeing as I mentioned Madam Bouchard, she is playing both singles and doubles at Roehampton, such has her star fallen. It's only four years since she was in the final! She is, however, through to the final round of qualifying after a three set win today against Karolina Muchova, having beaten #18 Zhu in q1. The final hurdle is #2 Duque Marino, which is a proper test. That is a rather better run than in Paris, where Bouchard retired hurt in her first match when trailing 6-0 2-1. Genie wasn't the only recent finalist at the Bank of England club, as her predecessor as runner-up Sabine Lisicki also entered the q-draw this year. Lisicki lost her first match to Anna Kalinskaya though. One wonders whether, in a standard year for young British talent compared to this years glut, whether both would have received main draw wild cards?

All Brits fall in qualifying as the last standing, James Ward, loses to Benjamin Bonzi by three sets to one. Both remaining doubles pairs also lost yesterday. So it's just the by right of ranking/protected ranking and wild cards involved, then.

In non-British news, there were some relatively well known names in the final round of the qualies. On the Women's side that was two former finalists, Genie Bouchard and Vera Zvonereva. Both won. On the Men's it was former French Semi-Finalist Ernests Gulbis two still young Aussies, Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Gulbis won, the Aussie pair lost. Before GO cheers too loudly, Kokkinakis lost to a fellow Aussie (Alex Bolt) and two more came through other matches (Jason Kubler and John-Patrick Smith).

Draw today. British women have by and large got a filthy draw, especially Dart, Broady and Dunne. Men a bit better, with the exception of Liam Broady. Wawrinka's bad luck continues as he gets Dmitrov first up. Edmund seeded to meet Djokovic in round 3 if he gets that far (quite possible he won't, given his limitations on grass).

Andy Murray's notional route to the final is a bit daunting. Don't think he would have much of a chance if fully fit.

                            R1: Paire

                            R2: Chardy/Shapovalov

                            R3: Del Potro

                            R4: Sock/Goffin

                            QF: Nadal

                            SF: Zverev/Djokovic/Thiem

My word, you are not kidding about Naomi Broady, Harriet Dart and Katy Dunne's draws. For those who can't be bothered to look it up, that is #3 Garbine Muguruza (3rd favourite according to the bookies and just the defending champion, so at least it will be on Centre), #7 Karolina Pliskova (~6th favourite) and #11 Jelena Ostapenko (surprisingly long odds of up to 50/1 that look tempting). Serena Williams isn't the favourite, btw, presumably due to questions about her fitness. The bookies consensus pick is Petra Kvitova.
Of the other Women, Katie Boulter looks to have the best draw in Veronica Cepede Royg, who is good on clay. Boulter is good on grass, and based on recent results and the few performances of hers I've seen is playing top 100 standard Tennis. Genuine chance of a win there. Heather Watson can ask Boulter for up-to-date tips as she plays Kirsten Flipkens (then the winner of Ostapenko-Dunne), which is one Watson could win but could easily lose as well. Katie Swan and Gabi Taylor have tough asks against Irina-Camelia Begu and Genie Bouchard. And finally Jo Konta has a very tricky match against Natalia Vikhlyantseva, who is a rising young Russian with a WTA Tour final on grass to her name (Rosmalen last year). Konta would drop to around 50 in the world if she lost in R1, and needs a run to the QFs to be stay in the top 32.

In non-British terms, the unlucky top 8 player to be facing a R3 match against Serena is Elena Svitolina, who really doesn't need extra hurdles put in her way at Slams. And there are some mouth-watering ties for R1, such as Kerber vs Zvonereva, Bencic vs Garcia, Goerges vs Puig, Giorgi vs Sevastova but for me the standout is Vekic vs Stephens. That really ought to be on Centre.

On the Men's side, Wawrinka-Dimitrov is a no-brainer for Centre Court and clearly the tie of the round. Mofils-Gasquet is also one to look out for (Court 1 for that one, I guess). Paire-Murray would be a tie to make an effort to see even without parochial interest, just like Chardy-Shapovalov which is the next tie down the draw. Oh, and James Ward must be getting closer and closer to being involved, seeing as there are five Lucky Losers in the main draw already, including two playing each other (Tomic vs Hurkacz).

Aside from Andy Murray vs Benoit Paire, the other British male R1 draws are Cameron Norrie vs Aljaz Bedene (one of these players has lived in Britain for most of the last decade), Liam Broady vs Milos Raonic (whose seeding the committee upped from 32 to 13 due to their grass formula), Kyle Edmund vs Alex Bolt (Aussie qualifier) and Jay Clarke vs Ernests Gulbis (who came through qualifying as well).

Murray on Centre means a high seeded player gets bumped so it will be interesting to see how Wimbledon plays that, especially if it rains.

Did Henman still get Centre when he started to slide down the rankings?

Just checked - he was unseeded in his last two years (2006 and 2007) and played on the show courts, reaching the second round both times. First match in 2006 he was on court number one against Robin Soderling, otherwise it was centre court.

Well, he says he is heading to the States for the hardcourt swing and US Open, and that this has just come along a bit too soon. We will see. And yes, there will be a(nother) Lucky Loser to replace him. LL's can be dropped in to 1st round matches until pretty well the last minute. There have been players in the past who have gone on court with 15 minutes notice. What it's too late for is a draw rejig, but given Murray wasn't seeded one of those wouldn't have been neccesary anyway.
That is at least 6 Lucky Losers playing in the Men's now, so close to half of all the losers in final qualifying. There are at least two who face each other in R1. It's nowhere near the record though - that came in the boycott year in the 70s when there were dozens.
