"You can't judge a book by its cover"

A silly saying. Surely the point of a cover is to intrigue you and make you pick up the book with a view to reading it.

The Philip Roth RIP thread made me think this. I picked up 'The Plot Against America' because on the cover it had the well known American stamp of Yosemite National Park with a swastika overprinted onto it. Being an occasional philatelist (I go through phases of being interested in it), it intrigued me. I'd heard of Philip Roth before but probably wouldn't have picked up that book, bought and read it if it wasn't for the cover.

Recently I read 'My Salinger Year' (mentioned on Salinger thread) and there's a lot of detail about how JD Salinger was very particular about covers and the way titles appeared on the spines of his books. It's portrayed as typically odd behaviour, but maybe more authors should be demanding when it comes to book covers.

Anyway, what books did you buy because of the cover, and how did it turn out?
