Pull up selector! Pakistan in England 2018

Some interesting selections from Ed Smith - Buttler and Bess in for Vince and Leach, with Buttler due to play as a specialist batter in the lower middle order. Seems they've had the conversation with Root that he should go to three, but not with Bairstow that he should give the gloves to someone else. If they give Buttler license to go for it, it could be exciting, but it's a little worrying that no-one else was deemed worthy to step up.

Yes, very pleased to see Buttler back in the side but likewise would've given him the gloves too. Is this likely to be Cook's final series, with a new opener in for the India matches, or do we reckon he might hang around for those too? Given his recent scores for England, he might end up getting pushed before he jumps. That is, if there was a queue of openers knocking on the door.

Personally, I think it may be the other way around. Cook will be retained for reasons of lack of pressing alternatives, and for spurious reasons of experience, etc, for India as well. Fingers crossed he proves us all wrong – and that Haseeb Hameed finds his mojo again.

Jonathan Liew in the Indy (or his sub-editor, maybe) suggests a 'new era'. The squad includes one new player and no-one else under 26. They are still reliant on Jimmy, Broad and Chef as there's little confidence in the alternatives. A succession of spinners getting one or two games each. Still, at least there's Woody's dancing horse and the new lad sounds like a Soviet 5 Year Plan. No danger of Lord's looking that far ahead.

Couple of questions for the panel. Who's the better/ best keeper available? And where should the best batsman go in? I'd say #4 rather than #3

The bowling resources in particular look bleak. Not that there aren't some decent players out there, but no one you can cohere it around like Anderson and Broad.

Anyone going to the Tests? I'm at Lord's next Thursday

I'm there on Thursday too, hopefully with my wife. We should meet up for a pint.

Thought Lords/the MCC had moved beyond that segregated seating by gender thing. When oh when, etc etc

                Ha.

Okey-doke Ray. I'll be getting there a bit late, possibly not till lunch, due to my daughter's school callously arranging their sports day for Thursday morning and not consulting me, but after that will shout you up

Going to the Saturday at Headingley as usual. Booked exactly the same seats as we had for the Windies last year. Wonder if anyone's sat in them since then?

The new T20I (red) and ODI (blue) kits are out. There's a launch video with several England players (women and men, hurray) playing a game of tape-ball cricket with kids in Peckham.

First time in 12 years that I won't be attending a Test Match. Was abroad when tickets went on sale for Trent Bridge and Headingley and therefore missing out on my prefered seats (Ratcliffe Road Upper and Fred Trueman enclosure).

Time to show that tasty middle order again, then, perhaps?

Malan gone too, 3 down. Are you Ireland in disguise?

                                    Nah - they don't have a K O'B.

Looks like Anderson will get a go whilst it's still murky...

For fuck's sake, England. Perhaps we should just tell them they've got 50 overs to score as many as they can next time we bat first?

Amir takes excellent catch to get rid of Wood. Before had done the worst bit of boundary fielding I've ever seen.

184 runs. Even a T20 side wouldn't be crowing about that.

285 required in second innings to beat our tally ...

A lot of bad and just plain directionless play by England today. You can't blame Buttler, but Root, Stoneman and Malan were really shirking their responsibilities.

Agnew's idea of letting Woakes open the batting looks better and better by the day.

As it is, though, I'd drop Stoneman, with some regret, for the next match, unless he can put a score together.
