    One volume istories of sports

Read the fantastic America's Game about the NFL recently. Looking for similar on other sports.

Now reading George Vecsey's Baseball, which is good but nothing like as detailed as America's Game.

America's Game was originally a television series, so the best baseball analogue would be the book for Ken Burns' series.

The ice hockey equivalent is the companion volume to the CBC's Hockey: a People's History

Given that you are someone who appreciates stories from a simpler time, I would highly recommend the baseball oral histories collected in Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of their Times.

The Ken Burns book looks just right, thanks.

I'm not really an oral history man.

Look at the excerpt of the Ritter book I linked. They aren’t transcripts.

David Goldblatt 'The Ball is Round' is a pretty good go at a single volume history of football Tubby.

Benjo Maso's Sweat of the Gods is the best single volume cycling book I've read.
