    World Snooker Championship 2018

The Seventeen Day Crucible Marathon itself doesn't start until Saturday week, but the banners including a Shaun Murphy death stare were up in Sheffield last weekend and qualifying began yesterday.

The top two ladies were given entry into qualifying, Ng On Yee got whacked 10-1 by Matthew Selt. Reanne Evans is 9-7 down to Dominic Dale. If Evans did come back in that then it's still hard to see her at the Crucible as her draw section looks brutal, with Mike Dunn up next then the final qualifying against an in-form Graeme Dott or the promising youngster Sonny Akani - he's the guy who gave Ronnie an almighty scare at the UK in December. Dott is worth keeping an eye on, he won't win the thing overall but could beat someone who might, if he got someone like Judd Trump in the first round you'd have to fancy Dotty's chances.

Anthony Hamilton v Martin O'Donnell sounds quite a match, the latter leads 7-4 after two sessions, which equates to the thick end of eight hours playing time. World Snooker has started publicly displaying the average shot time of competitors and Hamilton is coming at a whopping 41 seconds, which is more than double what a lot of players manage.

Liang Wenbo has just made a maximum against Rod Lawler, he's 9-1 up at present.

Jimmy White is still going, he's 5-4 up against Sam Craigie, if he gets through that he'll face Joe Perry next.

No major surprises so far, the highest ranked player to be knocked out was Mark Joyce losing to the local lad (and Wednesday fan) Adam Duffy.

Among the matches still to begin is Peter Ebdon v James Wattana which was a Crucible match all the way back in 1994. On the other hand there's a millennial clash between Yan Bingtao and Jackson Page, both of whom were born this century. Yan is working his way up the rankings - he's now 22nd - and there's a reasonable chance he'll be a seed next year. Page is a Welshman who's had a few results, mainly at his home tournament. It's not totally beyond the realms of impossibility that this will be a world final some years down the line.

This is the only time I'll watch snooker all year, it's always been interesting to see who is in the qualifying rounds and to hear Ebdon versus Wattana is a huge blast from the past.

O'Donnell finally beat Hamilton 10-7 in a match that concluded at 12.50am this morning. Quite an early finish compared to Stuart Carrington's final frame decider with Nigel Bond the night before which didn't end until 2.05. Hamilton is the highest ranked player out so far, though the outcome wasn't a great surprise as Hamilton's had health problems this season. The shock result was Cao Yupeng (twice a ranking finalist this season) losing to Robin Hull.

Liang had a chance for a second maximum in his 10-2 win but he managed to miss the final black. Jimmy White won his match.

This morning's matches are underway, stand out score so far is Ken Doherty already 3-0 up in the all-Irish clash with Josh Boileau.

Five Live said this morning that no-one has ever scored two 147s in the same match. And I guess no-one has ever come that close before!

No-one's ever even made two maximums in the same tournament before and there's only about half a dozen times ever where someone's missed the final black. Doherty famously did it in the Masters final some years since.

Yan 6-3 up on Page at the interval, Matthew Stevens whacking an amateur I've never heard of 8-1.

Jimmy White out - he lost to Joe Perry in what was initially a tight match before Perry pulled away in the second session. Perry's next opponent is Mark Davis who's only dropped a single frame so far. In another old school match up Matthew Stevens and Ken Doherty will meet in final qualifying.

Surprise result of the day was Yan Bingtao surrendering a big lead over Tian Pengfei and then losing a late night deciding frame. Mark King and David Gilbert were the other notable defeats over the weekend.

Wouldn't be April without World Snooker making a fuck up of the draw. This year it got delayed two hours because of "technical issues". When they did get started there was a late platform switch from Facebook to Twitter and the stream only began midway through the second tie. They also clearly forgot to heat the balls properly what with giving Ronnie an awkward opponent.

              Mark Selby v Joe Perry
              Mark Allen v Liam Highfield
              Kyren Wilson v Matthew Stevens
              Shaun Murphy v Jamie Jones
              John Higgins v Thepchaiya Un-Nooh
              Stuart Bingham v Jack Lisowski
              Luca Brecel v Ricky Walden
              Judd Trump v Chris Wakelin
              Ding Junhui v Xiao Guodong
              Anthony McGill v Ryan Day
              Marco Fu v Lyu Haotian
              Barry Hawkins v Stuart Carrington
              Mark Williams v Jimmy Robertson
              Neil Robertson v Robert Milkins
              Ali Carter v Graeme Dott
              Ronnie O’Sullivan v Stephen Maguire

In terms of who is going to win the thing overall, the logical candidates are either Selby or O'Sullivan who both happen to be the top two seeds. O'Sullivan has had a season that is as good as anything he's ever produced, winning five ranking titles along the way and actually playing like the Ronnie of old an awful lot. The big question is how much he can keep his head together and not get distracted in the course of the tournament. He's already given an interview where he said "the best player doesn't always win here". Though he does seem to have turned up rather than not entering at all as he promised in January...

Selby has had a more awkward season, a lot of early exits though two big tournament wins mean he's wound up second on the season rankings. The latter of these wins was in the recent China Open. He's the king of long form matches really, won here the last two years and has only lost one multiple-session match (Ding in the International Championship final in September 2016) since McGill was the last player to down him here three years back. His draw looks pretty horrible mind, what with a potential path of Perry - Allen - Wilson / Murphy - Trump / Higgins. A Selby - O'Sullivan final would be great though, they've consistently been the best players in recent years and there would be a real clash of styles.

Beyond those two Murphy and Higgins look the most likely contenders. Murphy has gone deep into a lot of tournaments this season and managed to win one when he beat Ronnie in the Champion of Champions in November. Higgins has two ranking tournaments to his name and he'd probably have more if he hadn't kept running into Ronnie. He was runner up last year, he knows his way round the Crucible campaign and he's not got the most demanding of openers.

Hard to build a case for anyone else to win it really. Ding seems to have conquered his Crucible demons in recent years but he's just as likely to win it as he is to lose tamely to Xiao in the opening round. Trump is an underachiever who will lose focus and lose a match he should win. Hawkins is a Crucible specialist with a favourable draw but it seems hard to see him actually beating the very best players in a four session match. Williams "the Welsh has been" has bounced back this year but is still prone to having a session somewhere along the way where he gets beat 7-1 and doesn't look like he knows which end of the cue to hold. Robertson is climbing back up the rankings after a difficult few years but again it feels hard to see him beating the very best. Allen hasn't kicked on at all from his Masters win in January.

On the unique demands of the Crucible, let's face it, having to spend over two weeks in Sheffield would be enough to destroy anyone, mentally.

Selby in some early trouble - 4-0 down to Perry at the interval. He's not playing at all well either, he's not scoring, his safety and positional play are quite literally all over the place, he looks knackered.

Clawed it back to 4-2 but is now staring down the barrel of 7-2.

Maguire always looked one of the trickier first-round opponents on paper, and duly notches a century in the opening frame.

Ronnie wins three on the bounce, but Maguire steadies the ship for 6-3 at the end of the session.

I’m at the Crucible until next Sunday.

Saw Fu-Lyu in the first session. Fu had a retina operation in January, and this is his first tournament back. He said before the tournament that he didn’t feel right, and his long potting was nowhere near his usual standard. Lyu was China’s next big thing a few years back, and once he settled, he totally justified his lead.

Ronnie-Maguire was strange. Ronnie played badly in the first four frames, missing routine shots left, right and centre. Maguire wasn’t at his best, but played well enough to rattle off four frames in an hour. A horrendous kick in the fifth rattled Maguire, and it took him a couple of frames to get over it, but once he did he was back in control. Ronnie did say the tournament was too long, so maybe that’ll be his excuse.

Carter-Dott was all over the place. The balls seemed to actively be working against the players. Carter conceded the fourth before he needed snookers, and Dott looked great to start with, but got slowly pissed off with the run of the balls.

Wilson (a dark horse to win it) dominated Stevens, but Stevens wasn’t well.

Hope you enjoy it DA, not least because you won't have to listen to Dennis or JV.

Saw Lyu at the UK last December, he had that fearlessness you see in young players (he looked about 12) though not necessarily the game to be able to execute his shots. Fu was awful this season even before his eye surgery, he's only seeded through reaching the semis here two years ago and that purple patch he had either side of Christmas 2016 when he was playing better than anyone.

Think Wilson has the game and temperament to be world champion one day, though he could do with the draw opening up for him this year.

Must have been an O'Sullivan blitz this morning, as he's beaten Maguire 10-7.

My app has Murphy S currently playing against "Jones Jam" which I rather like in a modern snooker kind of way. I assume that boringly he's just James Jones and they had to distinguish him from some other J Jones but I will just imagine that he's some kind of Detroit hip hop record producer originally from Aberystwyth

If ever there was a tournament designed for someone who's stuck in bed for 23 hours every day, this is it.
