    René Houseman

Argentina's 1978 World Cup-winning midfielder has passed away from cancer, aged 64.

Pretty good player, as I recall - and regarded in his homeland as one of the best of all time. The young Houseman scored three times in W Germany 1974 and managed a further goal (the fifth of six) in 'that' match against Peru four years later.

César Luis Menotti spoke of him as a combination of 'Maradona and Garrincha', apparently.

What was the correct pronunciation of his surname? I recall Coleman shouting it like a bingo winner.

'Houzie-man' was certainly Coleman's preferred pronunciation, while most other commentators plumped for that of the late Peter of Chelsea.

He was apparently nicknamed 'Loco'. As indeed were about 18,379 other South American footballers at the time.
