Extraordinary conclusion to Clare v Limerick - level after two sets of extra-time, so decided by a penalty shootout style set of five 65s.

    5-5, sudden death now.

Thought the club final was going to be a shootout as well but it's gone to a replay

A dramatic finish in Ballybofey, as two injury-time points secure Mayo a draw and extends their 20-year unbroken stint in Division One. Donegal and Kildare are relegated, while Dublin surprisingly lose at home to Monaghan in a dead rubber. Roscommon and Cavan both bounce straight back after relegation last year, the latter breaking Tipp hearts with a comeback win (apparently the Premier spent one season in the top-flight in 1972). Louth fall to Division Three, but back games must be played to decide if Down or Meath descend with them (the Ulster side are relegation favourites, as they must play Tipp, with Meath to face Louth).

In Division Three, Armagh were already promoted, but surprisingly lost to relegated Wexford. Fermanagh joined them in the second tier in what was essentially a playoff away to Longford. Meanwhile, unlikely wins for Offaly against Westmeath, and Sligo against Derry, sent the Ulster side, unbelievably, into the bottom tier (think Aston Villa or Newcastle in League Two). Carlow had already escaped Division Four for the first time since 1985, but defeat against Laois helped the Midlanders join them as promotees, ahead of Antrim. The 2017 wooden spoon award goes to Wicklow, with only two points from their six games - the divisional table is a mess, but as the outstanding matches are meaningless, they will never be played.

Meath should have the easier game as you say but you can guarantee that Louth will be doing there best to drag Meath down with them, there's no love lost there, Derry in division 4 is bizarre, they were in the top flight just a couple of years ago

Will analyse yesterday's and today's action later, but anyone who wants to watch a tasty-looking hurling semi between Wexford and Kilkenny can do so via the TG4 YouTube channel from 2 (No geo-blocking, as far as I can see).

The Division Two final's a rip-roaring affair, Roscommon ahead 4-15 to Cavan's 4-10 with tine nearly up.

Galway currently drawing 0-8 apiece with Dublin at the break - their defensive solidity and attacking pace will have both Mayo and Kerry taking notes.

Saturday was like a mid-Noughties renaissance, with Laois and Armagh both comfortable winners in the D4 and D3 deciders, while Limerick and Tipp was another hurling cracker, going to extra-time before the Premier deservedly prevailed. Kilkenny won pulling up against Wexford, the nine-point margin as wide as the balance of play suggests, so the "Big Three" reassert themselves in the League final.

Galway sadly ran out steam in the final stages, with Dublin putting down a marker, but the referee was rather generous in his awarding of frees throughout.

The three-year Kilkenny "drought" is over, as the Cats claimed the ninth League of Brian Cody's reign, and 20th major piece of silverware in 20 seasons, with what proved a comfortable victory over Tipperary in the finish. The most notable aspect was an impeccable free-taking display by TJ Reid, scoring 0-15, and only missing one free in injury-time from inside his own half.

Great win by the cats, many people, me included, had written them off after last year but they gave Tipp a good beating today. Tipperary outsmarted themselves by delaying coming out for the second half so they were unprepared and conceded a goal in the first ten seconds. They won't try that again in a hurry

In the interlude until the Championships start in May, time to visit a neglected but noteworthy story - the steady rise of British hurling. Traditionally, the GAA in Britain has been represented by London, who have won the odd B title in both hurling and football, and aside from the 2013 Connacht final, have had little to show from almost 40 years inclusion in the Western province. In recent years, however, most progress has been made by Warwickshire and Lancashire, with the former winning the fourth-level hurling Lory Meagher Cup and winning Divisions 3B and 3A in successive seasons. Meanwhile, the Mancunians had a 100% record in winning 3B in their inaugural small-ball season.

On a side note, the local club were involved in a curious scenario today - an injury-time goal meant they won a game by three points, ensuring they finished level with group rivals on points, head-to-head record, and points difference, eventually prevailing on a superior "points for" record of two.

There's similar happening in the USA, a friend of mine's brother is involved in Chicago gaa and reckons they should have a play-off against New York for the right to represent the USA in the all Ireland,he thinks they'd win regularly as well

Next week, the lesser-known (and also lesser reported) hurling championships commence, so here's your bluffer's guide:

                                Joe McDonagh Cup

                                Antrim
                                Carlow
                                Kerry
                                Laois
                                Meath
                                Westmeath

The inaugural year of this competition, for teams not good enough for the Liam McCarthy, but too strong for the Christy Ring. Antrim and Laois would be the traditional powers here, but Carlow look strong candidates for the honours. The winners play the bottom Leinster side, but Kerry would play the bottom Munster team.

                                Christy Ring Cup

                                Group 1:

                                Kildare
                                Mayo
                                Roscommon
                                Wicklow

                                Group 2:

                                Armagh
                                Derry
                                Down
                                London

Much weakened by the advent of the aforementioned, it's now more akin to the 2017 Nicky Rackard Cup. Kildare look the best bet.

                                Nicky Rackard Cup

                                Group 1:

                                Longford
                                Louth
                                Monaghan
                                Warwickshire

                                Group 2:

                                Donegal
                                Tyrone
                                Leitrim

The Birmingham-based side may well edge out the Wee County.

                                Lory Meagher Cup

                                Cavan
                                Fermanagh
                                Lancashire
                                Sligo

Lancs to build on their spring League title.

The all Ireland championship starts this Sunday with the opening salvos in the Connaught championship.
Because there's only 5 counties in Connaught New York and London are shoehorned in to make it look a bit more competitive,New York host Leitrim and as usual there'll be a big crowd there as the exiles come out to party and hopefully cause an upset. There chances are better than usual because Leitrim are by far the worst team in Connaught but in veteran Emlyn Mulligan they have the only real class act on the pitch and should give them the edge; Leitrim by a couple for me
Over in Ruislip I must confess I haven't been following either side but Sligo usually put up a good fight in the championship so I'll go for them

Interestingly, the former Armagh footballer, Jamie Clarke, is lining out for NY. RTE schedule of live games is rather hurling-heavy:

Fairly routine in Ruislip, with Sligo defeating the home side 1-21 to 1-11. Two hours until throw-in in the Big Apple.
