Also, the anthems aren't right. Too symphonic, not enough oomph. Probably an Aussie plot to make all the stirring ones sound as lifeless as theirs.

No, it isn't. It's a shock because New Zealand have always previously made the Commonwealth final, but Malawi are vastly above North Korea in 1966 in their status. They have been a consistent top 10 in the world side in Netball teams around for a couple of decades. New Zealand will have known prior to the game they were in for a properly challenging and losable match, same as always against Malawi. It's only fractionally more surprising than England's subsequent win over the Black Ferns.

Praught's an interesting case actually, brought up in the U.S. by two white American parents she only met her Jamaican birth father in 2013 and apparently then decided to represent the country to honour her heritage.

Yeah, we covered Malawi's standing in the sport before (though I think the link naming them is now dead.

I've been thinking that 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' was sounding more John Williams than normal.

                Predicted Ultonia medal count

Fighting 8 (they're all guaranteed at least a bronze having made the semis)

Shooting 1 (alas our veteran who already has 8 medals from 10 previous Games is likely to miss out)

                Gymnastics 1

                So some sterotypes do linger.

Meanwhile, here's a longer term list of the last 100 Men's Golf Major Winners

                Rest of America 43
                Tiger Woods 14
                South Africa 8
                Ultonia 6
                Australia 5

                Others 24

There's something distasteful about the celebrations for smashing the field in the T35 100m, when the field includes competitors whose cerebral palsy is restricting them significantly more.

Is the Commonwealth's using a different standard than regular Parasport? Because in that, the first person across the line isn't necessarily the winner. Results are weighted according to level of impairment.

Scotland seem to be below their target- no chance of getting Top 5, not many golds and probably no chance of reaching ten. Wales seem far stronger than in Glasgow but. India seems arsed this time as well.

What was Scotland’s target, given they already have more medals than in any other non-British games?

Think 10 golds and top 5 in the ranking.

National organisations and funding bodies don't normally set a target of X number of golds or a place in the medal table. It is usually total number of medals overall and Scotland look to have exceeded their target of 30.

Zharnel Hughes has to be DQd for that in the 200m final.

Aye the English wrestler handed off the Trinidad guy inside him. If he's disqualified it's a bronze for Ultonia

He's out confirmed and will be playing in the rugby 7s instead

Ah, didn't spot the tape all over one leg, must have been carrying an injury and seized up in the second lap.

A celebrating athlete being caught on the line is one of the must-sees in athletics. Shame it didn't quite happen there, Langford was furious (with himself?).

England are appealing after the men's 200m

                                        First time for everything eh

I suffered same fate in the same event at school (u-15 heats IIRC). Only difference was that I crossed the line last anyway

Reinstate him with a bronze. Only fair.

The basis of the appeal is apparently that Hughes was DQd for coming out of his lane (which I don't think he did) but any review has to take in to account he impeded Richards from passing him. It will be ridiculous if he gets the gold.

Does Michael Johnson live in the UK

He's never on the telly over here (then again, neither are athletics outside of the Olympics)

Wiki has him living in Marin County, California though I realise you may not have been being entirely serious. Like McEnroe, it sometimes seem like we've adopted him (though I think McEnroe has a major presence on US TV too). This may be because they are both probably the most knowledgeable and entertaining pundits on their disciplines.

For instance, this is what Johnson said about Hughes prior to the final :

He looked really good yesterday, ran a really good bend, but I think that in order for him to ultimately get to sub-20 seconds, he's going to have to clean up his technique a little bit at the end.

He's a bit jerky there and there's some wasted motion, some rocking from side-to-side that comes with the arm swing.

Those are some things for his coach to work on to clean up.
