Showers, thunder in Auckland region. Very localised, but if you're in the UK you might not miss too much if you choose sleep over coffee.

Gonna rain most of the weekend isn't it? The series win is still on for England.

I see Jimmy Anderson is unhappy with the shape-shifting pink ball. NZ really are at an advantage here seeing as they actually managed to hit it a few times.

That’d be horrendously unjust if rain stops a NZ win.

Been another good day for England

Tempting to declare, certainly by lunch.

Root out off last ball of day, possible broken finger too. 132/3. Probably need more rain.

If NZ wrap it up, it will be only the 2nd time they have beaten England by an innings. Previous one was the alleged sex and drugs tour

Watching this live on ESPN3. Malan goes early, no foot movement.

YJB gets a reprieve as Watling misses a fairly straightforward legside catch.

YJB gets a second reprieve in a set of comically bad cricket. Shocking half-tracker from Astle, terribly pulled by Bairstow getting a toe end sending a dolly to Boult at mid-on, who promptly drops the kind of catch a 5 year old would be embarrassed to miss.

Stokes, after channeling his inner Collingwood, falls to the last ball* before dinner** and England are 300-7. NZ have 31 overs in which to - surely and deservedly - wrap this up

*His dismissal made it the last ball. He would have faced 3 more had he not got out
                          ** Against modern cricket

So out of the last 12 away tests, England has lost 10 and drawn two... That's not a great record.

It's quite something to score 320 in your second innings and still lose by an innings.

NZ played very well, though. The wicket was flat on Day 5 but they got the job done, unlike the previous tour when Prior enabled England to scrape a draw. Their bowling looks better than England's: that few mph quicker that makes all the difference. Catching was also outstanding.

Wasn't it three sessions in a row that an English wicket fell in the last over of a session (which then became the last ball of the session, obviously)?

Apparently the first time NZ have won consecutive Tests against England, albeit years apart.

I had to refresh my memory about Nasser's Nadir of Ninety-Nine, when England lost two but not in a row. Wikipedia offers a comforting footnote to those who might think this England team have hit new lows:

Darren Maddy and Ed Giddins (both Eng) made their Test debuts.

                                    So yeah, it's been worse.

England are still strong at home, whereas between 1986 and 1999 they lost 11 home series, including at least one home series against every Test nation.

However, I think the current side is uniquely poor away from home because they have no genuine pace or spin and some of the batting is not Test class in away conditions.

How does England's recent win rate away from home compare to the other major test nations?

Every team except England and Zimbabwe won an away Test in 2017.

Weren't the Ashes their only away tests last year?

Yeah, my bad. I think that, excepting Zimbabwe, England have gone longest without winning an away Test, in terms of both time and number of matches.

Who's "Leach"? He's in the squad for the the second test anyway. (Unlike Moeen and Woakes)

Is Leach the fella who keeps having to go to Loughborough for remedial work on his action?

Looking forward to Vince playing some lovely strokes during his innings of 34 and 7.
