Crewesaders Revenge? Weekend matchgoing thread 13/01/18

Carlisle v Crewe for me tomorrow.

We caught them on a bad day at Gresty Road earlier in the season, winning 5-0 with a significant helping hand from ex-Cumbrian Michael Raynes. Sadly I missed that game, and am not expecting my attendance at Brunton Park tomorrow to be blessed with a similar scoreline.

I ought to be going to Wealdstone v Hereford in the Trophy tomorrow, but the game's segregated and the Stones' fans've been given the end with the stand that was buggered by Eleanor. So I might go to Rayners Lane v FC Broxbourne Borough, but I'm feeling crap. So I'll probably end up gawping at Jeff Stelling in the pub...

I think family commitments and a friend’s 40th birthday party in Reading are going to limit me to ticking off a relatively local ground this weekend.

Thinking of going to Bedfont & Feltham v Fleet Spurs in the Combined Counties League D1. As often happens they are at home at the same time as their very near neighbours Bedfont Sports host Guildford City and I’m sure it must be possible to watch both games at simultaneously from the right angle :

Sports are hanging basket wankers too so it would be amusing to deny them the price of admission.

TheLikesOfDoncaster vs Plymouth Argyle for me.

Rovers have been on a good run in the league, so me turning up to try and flog the latest edition of our fanzine should soon put a stop to all that.

              Bedfont Sports have earned it.

They were the visitors at Knaphill this Saturday just gone too and the team, bench and support were all lairy gits, very glad to see them lose 2-1.

Frankfurt v Freiburg. Freiburg are coached by renaissance man Christian Streich, who's a reader and believes that football clubs should be part of the community, not subject to the whims of rampant commercialism. His club stands by their coaches, even in times of relegation (Volker Finke survived three drops to the second division during his 16-year spell). So I always want them to do well and probably won't mind much if they win at Eintracht. Which they did the last time I saw this fixture almost 23 years ago, 1-2, when national team first choice Andy Köpke, under no pressure from anybody while shaping up to kick the ball out of his hands, fumbled and dropped it into his own goal, U7 style. Most anti-climactic winning goal I've seen in all the years I've watched football.

Cardiff v Sunderland. 12.30 kick off. Pre-noon pub meet up.

Wondering what the reception for Chris Coleman will be from the Cardiff crowd.

                          Cardiff 4 v 0 Sunderland

It was 0-0 at half time but Sunderland's game went south within 5 minutes of the restart, conceding a sloppy goal then having a man sent off. It looked a harsh red to me but I haven't seen a replay. Cardiff then went on to score three more goals. At 2-0 Sunderland hit the post, but otherwise weren't up to much.

Darren Ferguson thinks that the referees in the Football League are unfit and the FA should *shoot them" in his Radio Sheffield post match interview. Any more info on that Leo's?

                            Barnsley 0-0 Wolves

A fully deserved battling point for the Super Reds today. Wolves looked good but not fantastic, but we defended well, without parking the bus and had a few half chances near the end.
Despite them hitting the bar and firing over from about a yard out, Wolves finished with a grand total of no shots on target.

                              Handsworth Parramore 3-0 Parkgate

A scoreline that didn't reflect the balance of play, for much of proceedings it was difficult to tell which was the side near the top of the division. Handsworth didn't create a lot but were clinical when they did and all the goals came in the final half hour.

First visit this season to Sandy Lane. In the interim the Atcosts down the side and behind the far goal have gone, the latter being replaced by a structure that redefines the word "functional". Friendly hosting club though, everything done with a smile, decent bunch of supporters, free teamsheet, free sandwich and Kipling lemon slice in the clubhouse at half time.

Felt quite fun to go to Worksop as a travelling fan and drinking in their pubs which if nothing else was pleasantly cheap, fifteen quid buying me four pints and a Wetherspoons burger for lunch. There was also a lady delivering a spectacular rant to someone outside another pub which was of such general ferocity it had drawn a crowd.

Eintracht 1 Freiburg 1. Eintracht at least have started to try playing football again - much less of the depressing pre-Xmas long ball attrition. Should have buried the game by half-time, but were only 1-0 up against a weak Freiburg team. Except in the second half Freiburg weren't weak, they started closing down all the space they'd allowed Frankfurt to exploit over the first 45. They scored their one chance - a header direct from a corner kick, and Eintracht missed their one chance, a header from open play. Not a great game, not a bad one. Bloke to the left of me spent a lot of time playing Candy Crush, bloke to the right of me was smoking. I am against both of those activities right in my proximity, but not violently so.

                                  South Garston 2-1 British Rail
South Garston play at Little Heath Playing Fields in Speke, a couple of hundred metres from Liverpool Airport. Not a lot there in terms of facilities, only a couple of shipping containers for changing rooms which double as walls for the local youths to leave messages on - mostly appears to be a discussion about which swear word best follows "orange", although a few have had a go at anatomical drawing.

This was a quarter final tie in the league cup for the second tier of the Liverpool County Premier. On paper this should have been an away win, at British Rail are top of the table and unbeaten, whilst their hosts are near the bottom. However the visiting keeper virtually gifted two goals to South Garston in the first half. First he misjudged running out to tackle an onrushing forward, only for the forward to kink past him and shoot into an empty net. A little later he miskicked the ball, and instead of sending it upfield, he put a load of spin on the ball which sent it fly over his head, to which he could react only second quickest. British Rail scored on their first attack of the second half, but could not find an equaliser - a combination of a good defensive performance by South Garston and some poor finishing by Rail.

                                    Curson Ashton 0 Chorley 2

Not huge amounts to get excited about, but a fairly decent game between two average sides. Chorley deserved the win, appearing to have that little bit more quality, but both sides put in a decent effort. For the first time ever, saw a referee give a red card, speak to the linesman and then change his mind. Good decision in the end.

Nice set-up at Curzon, with programme shop worth a look. Picked up a 1985 Non League Directory for a quid which makes fascinating reading to see how things have changed over time. Always more churn in the non-league system than you imagine.

All in all, a good day out. Chinese buffet went down well with my son. Didn't think much of the main courses (all seems to have almost exactly the same sauce with little flavour) but you get what you pay for. In future, I think my approach in the future will be to stick with the starters and desserts (pretty good selection) and a bit less on the main courses...

                                            Carlisle 1-0 Crewe Alex

Not a very good game. Our tactics were all wrong from the start and we could've been two down quite quickly. Curle made two changes at HT and while we never entered the realms of fluency, we didn't look likely to concede. Crewe were really quite crap. Young Sam Cosgrove scored the winner with his first league goal, and a handful of Crewe supporters made themselves look like absolute tools by charging across the stand and trying to get past the segregation netting - disappointed that the stewards stopped them to be honest, it would've been entertaining to see what they did when they realised they were about to attack the Press box. Referee Mr. Sarginson would not have found favour with Darren Ferguson as he made a number of baffling, borderline inept decisions that particularly infuriated Crewe boss David Artell. Still, three points, despite being sub-mediocre.

It's a daft thing to say, but aye, the officials, referee and assistant referee, somehow between them missed what looked an absolute stonewall penalty in the last minute, when James Coppinger was bundled over. Had either of the officials been on the blind side of the foul I'd have understood it's non-award, but both had seemingly a clear view, yet gave nothing.

He was also fuming suggesting Andy Butler was fouled on the free-kick for Plymouth's equaliser, but Butler went down looking for a soft decision that was clearly never going to come; so if blame lays anywhere there it's with the defender. And Rovers should've been out of sight by half-time really so whilst the non-penalty was a blow, it shouldn't have come to that.

Still, decent game; good to see two sides going at it - rather than one parking the bus from kick-off.
