I would rent a car and drive them to Stoke to make it happen.

Unfortunately the FAI is in charge of appointing a successor, however.

I’d be delighted with this, particularly the Keane bit.

      (Up the Vale!).

Guillem Balague has tweeted that Quique Sanches Flores is the favourite to get the job and has met with Stoke already.

No problem getting rid of O' Neill but I can't imagine they'll be queuing round the block to take over, especially if Denis O' Brien decides to pull the plug on his wages, could be a case of be careful what you wish for

The Stoke paper reports that the Stoke vice-Chairman and Chief Exec are in Spain and are hoping to conclude a deal with Quique Flores once Espanyol have played a Copa del Rey second leg this evening.

As long as the FAI don't come looking for Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny I don't really care if MON goes.
But there's little chance the FAI would consider a grubby little League of Ireland manager , even
the manager who won 3 of the last 5 league titles, broke new ground in Europe, 5 straight top 2 finishes with a team that was a basket case when he took over and effectively redefined what was possible for Irish football while playing superb football

Eoin Hand and Brian Kerr were successful loi managers who were treated with disdain by the so called superstars of Irish football, Hand in particular was unlucky not to qualify for the 1982 world cup from a tough group

Michael O'Neill wouldn't be too bad.

That money is a fucking curse. It turned the job into a really lucrative retirement gig for managers that were at their peak 15 and 30 years ago respectively. It got us two managers with no concept of modern football training methods, and with absolutely no experience whatsoever of building a functioning team out of the resources available to them. Michael O'Neill and stephen Kenny got league of Ireland teams to play good, and relatively successful football in the europa league. That is a much more useful measure than having managed juventus at heysel.

The other thing is that Kerr came into the job when the whole thing had been poisoned, and he inherited players with an old school attitude to preparation, and boozing. I'd say that Robbie Keane was a fucking nightmare to manage back then. The players now are well used to looking at video analysis, and right now are just begging for someone to tell them what to do, because they're simply not used to just going out and making it up every time they get the ball.

Yes, the money is an absolute curse.

Morten Olsen managed Denmark for 15 years for less than half the money O'Neil is on. Fuck, Olsen was earning less than Roy Keane is.

And Olsen's responsibilities also included developing a football philosophy and improving the youth structures. Which produced a team that hammered us 5-1.

Pfft. Pity. I envisaged a new dynasty, where as penance for signing for the scum, players were made to spend several hours a day being coached by Roy Keane.

So Ireland coached by manager with verbal agreement who is actively seeking new employment.

no Flores. Come On Stoke. Embrace your destiny. You're just bored of being a mid table premier league team.

I really don't think that too many Irish players would have that big a problem with having a manager who coached in the league of ireland. A lot of them played in the league of ireland, and quite frankly at this point many of them would really just like not to made look like a cunt when they play international football. Certain Past internationals might have resented being told what to do, but football has changed an awful lot in the last 10 years, and 10 years of terrifying managers, who largely leave it all up to you on the pitch has probably been a scarring experience for the players.

The problem is that John delaney will probably appoint steve bruce.

Please don’t go to Delaney Idiot Joy Showland Ireland Michael O’Neill. You already live in Embra. And there’s the clammy embrace of Malky Mackay to look forward to.

What I'm wondering is why he threw his hat in the ring in the first place, ego? or trying to get a better deal from the F.A.I? Either way it hasn't helped his popularity over here

Whatever the reasons, from a Stoke perspective this is all rather embarrassing. It is becoming reminiscent of Wolves after they sacked Mick McCarthy without having a clear plan for the replacement in place. Whoever is approached now will know they are not the man Stoke wanted or even close to it.

I'm not entirely sure why it's such a struggle. Stoke have both Premier League money and a decently wealthy and engaged owner who is not know to interfere. The current squad has some properly talented players in it, Butland, Allen and Shaqiri being the main three, but not the only ones; Zouma, Wimmer, Pieters, Martins Indi, Fletcher, Ramadan and Jese are all of the required standard. It should be possible to create a decent team out of what is already there plus a handful of additions in the right places. And there is money to do that. So why the issue? It surely can't be about living in Stoke, because the players and coaching staff don't do that anyway - they are all in the same Cheshire towns as those employed on Manchester and Merseyside. In fact the travel to Stoke is probably easier than it is to those cities.
