    Deniz Naki

Shots fired at his car in Germany and the police are investigating it as attempted murder, sounds more like an assassination attempt to me.

Naki is of Kurdish descent and has a tattoo of Dersim 62 on his arm. Dersim is the old name for Tunceli and is a predominantly Kurdish Alevi region of Turkey.

It's also the site of the last rebellion against Atatürk .

Wouldn't FIFA have some view on such a nakedly political move?

Or is it backing the Turkish FA because he's covered in political 'symbols' - tattoos? (Never knew Kurdish was Indo-European. Same word - Azadi- for freedom as Urdu.)

When I first moved to Turkey I kept getting told that Kurdish wasn't a language but a dialect of Turkish. When both come from completely different language families you can imagine the kind of bullshit that people believed about the Kurds.

Yeah, I remember about 4 years ago, chatting with an nice, educated, pretty 'westernised', liberal guy - a mountain guide - who still couldn't conceal his mistrust and dislike of Kurds. His mate, who was somewhat less liberal, was best avoided on the subject.

It was almost as bad as talking to white Brits about Romanians.
