'Throw your granny under the bus, it's...' A VOCAL THREAD.

Amy Camus aside, the most recent WORTHWHILE vocal gymnastics, was Beyonce.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob7vObnFUJc Now, I am going to leave that, when you should be listening and watching, the live version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2rgi65ZbXM

She climbs the ladder, then moves the target, then ...
Anyone else have worthwhile vocal gymnastics? (Cleo Laine. please, but, if it ain't "Little Blue Flower", no.)

Oh, and the latter may be the best 'mic drop' ever known.

Minnie Riperton had an incredible range but never exercised in vocal gymnastics. I admire her restraint and have little use for the Patti LaBelle school of grandstanding to which Beyoncé and her likes are the heirs.

Don't think I've ever heard any other Jennifer Hudson besides this, which I love and I heard for the first time for years yesterday. Do I need to investigate more?

Rereading the cover versions thread the other week lead me to this great Luther Vandross live version of A house is not a Home. With Dionne Warwick in the audience.

Thoroughly agreed on Beyonce. I've never seen her live but she's about the only stratospheric stadium act that it might just be worth paying those ridiculously high ticket prices for.

I love this, but seeing Jamie Foxx cracks me up.

One of the reasons I've a lot of time for Rihanna. She doesn't do that at all, and her vocals are all the more effective for it.

I don't know whether this recent enough but I love this version of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Tom Jones. He starts the song wildebeesting into the vocal and then handles the key change entirely effortlessly. Then, you think, he has to attack the chorus in a similar fashion which is going to lead to burst blood vessels somewhere. As it goes, he downplays it a bit and you think he is short changing us but he throws in the long held note at the end. Sir Tom is, of course, one of the finest technical vocalists in the pop/rock field.

Lalah Hathaway (daughter of Donny) guesting with Snarky Puppy on 'Something' from their 'Family Dinner Vol. 1' album. An amazing vocal performance. The reactions of delight and astonishment from the band and backing singers when she vocalises a short series of double tones at about the 6 minute mark are wonderful to behold.
