    2017: Halep - 6175
    2016: Kerber - 9080
    2015: S.Williams - 9945
    2014: S.Williams - 8485
    2013: S.Williams - 13260
    2012: Azarenka - 10595

Intriguingly, Halep's own level has changed little since 2014. It's just where that has got her has moved up the list.

    2017: 6175 - #1
    2016: 5228 - #4
    2015: 6060 - #2
    2014: 6292 - #3
    2013: 3335 - #11
To revisit this, at season's end, Halep is again number one, again with a relatively low points total (though higher than her own total last year): 6921

She will be missed, as there is no-one else like her. Nor any particular sign of others of her type amongst the next generation, either. It's quite sad that scampering defence allied to supreme attacking skill and creativity was never quite enough to win a slam title, that a certain heaviness of ball strike is apparently a fundamental component. The WTA shot of the year award has been her personnel fiefdom.

Not 100% clear exactly what is being proposed here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/46549664

Seems like a bit of a half-hearted (and vague) approach. Don't see why they don't just use the Protected Ranking towards seeding (as well as for entry) - would make everything much clearer.

What appears to be being put forward is not much at all, really. But then, it wasn't an issue with all the previous mothers returning to the Tour. Nor is it an issue any more in the specific case that has prompted the change.
They will probably quietly reset the rules back to where they were when Serena has retired in three years time.

Seeding as meant to reflect current abilities, not past ones. That is why using the protected rankings for seedings is inappropriate.

True, but it can also be argued that injury (or indeed pregnancy) can mean that current abilities are not properly reflected in the rankings.
