Free trade has never been popular among Italian companies and those who own them.

But if Italian agrifood business believes that they can triple exporting by cracking down on food counterfeiting. then surely signing trade deals that give full and proper protection to their trademarks is the way to go.

but on the other hand, italians complaining about counterfeiting is fucking hilarious.

They're trying to get the head of the social security institute sacked. Among his sins is implying that immigration might be good for an ageing society like Italy.

Wow. Do these fucktards think Elon Musk is going to invent a robot to wipe arses anytime soon?

He'd want more money for them than Italy's likely to have, too.

nah, they'd be cheaper than people, unfortunately the iterative design process would lead to some very exciting times as the bugs were ironed out. It would also take twice as long as you'd think.

This weekend's depressing Italian news is that the coalition's candidate for the Presidency of RAI (the state broadcaster, new Italian governments regularly turn over management at all state enterprises) is a former Berlusconi "journalist" who has recently been a frequent contributor to RT and met with Bannon last time he blew through.

Indeed it is, and Salvini has already denounced reporting on these incidents as "a Leftist plot".

60+ years of embourgoisement and co-option for one.

Massive infighting among personality-driven factions for another.

And, perhaps most importantly, the decimation of their traditional base through a) deindustrialisation and b) massive emigration by young, highly educated people who believe that they have no future in the country.

Repubblica is featuring four or five similar stories every day now.

And Salvini ontinues to pour oil on the fire by denying that it is happening.

It's very difficult to tell just how serious this is, given that it is August, but there are a number of new fault lines opening within the governing coalition.

In addition to the vaccine question noted above, there is increasing controversy around massive infrastructure projects, primarily the TAV (high speed rail line between Lyon and Torino) and the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline, which includes a sub-sea portion between Albania and Puglia). In both cases, M5S generally supports local environmentalists who have been fighting the projects for years, while the Lega (and Salvini in particular) sees them as net positives and is genuinely concerned about the cost of abandonment (estimated at billions of euro for the TAV).

The negotiations over the new budget to be launched in the fall also look to be contentious for sure.

Re this TAV, which I think was first mooted in the 1980s when TGVmania hit France, yes there are environmental concerns that's certain but I think M5S is just trying to extract more money from the EU (which is already footing 40% of the ~€10bn bill). Luigi di Maio wasn't against it before the elections in March, he wanted to "discuss things" but changed his mind after the elections. This is funny about that whippersnapper twat:

Coordinatore Ue, la Tav è strategica

Brinkhorst, cosa ne sa Di Mario di 30 anni fa visto che ne ha 31?

Well yes, M5S aren't necessarily known for the purity of their ideological positions.

There is also the fact that they are looking for issues that allow them to stay relevant in the context of the Lega having come to completely dominate the coalition.

The snippet I read on Il Sole 24 Ore seemed to suggest they were arguing more for spending infrastructure money in the cities (buses etc) rather than between them, rather than any environmental angle.

Largely because they currently control a number of cities where the natives are getting restless after M5S' failure to deliver the change that they promised.

I wasn't trying to claim that M5S' opposition to these projects was rooted in commitment to the environment, but rather noting that there has been serious local opposition for years (decades for the TAV, as Kev notes) that they are now piggybacking on.

He said Rome would try to apply its planned reforms, which include tax cuts and higher spending on pensions and welfare, without breaching fiscal conditions set by the European Union to help Italy reduce its public debt, the highest in the bloc after bailed-out Greece.

However, “our priority is the citizens and their needs,” Di Maio told broadcaster RAI in an interview.
