Need Recommendations: Book about Saxon Britain?

Having watched most of Vikings and gone down a few wiki rabbit holes as a result, I’m very interested to read about the “Dark Ages,” particularly Anglo-Saxon Britain and the Vikings. Also books about the fall of Rome and the “barbarians” would be good. Nothing too into the academic weeds, just a good overview for the non-specialist. Historical fiction might be good too, but I’m more interested in
history and historiography. So much of that period is not known except through sagas, etc, so it’s interesting to learn how what knowledge there is has developed.

Please make any and all recommendations.

Penguin’s “the Inheritance of Rome” is a very good general overview of Europe in the early Middle Ages.

Picts, Gaels and Scots by Sally M Foster is 5th-10th century Scotland only, but has some great illustrations and colour plates of fantastic Pictish and Gaelic stone carvings. Gives a concise historical account of the Kingdom of Pictland and Kingdom of Scots, (and the Welsh and Anglic kingdoms of now southern Scotland) and how the Viking invasions would help coalesce these into proto Scotland.

Isn't there a documentary TV version of this? He's pretty good.
