With a huge interview that is set to air in the United States of America on Sunday, March 25th, 2018, let us pause to remember a Le Mans Driver who finished 7th in the 2015 race.

      I had absolutely no idea

That was a rather strange race in Melbourne

Mercedes seemed to have calibrated its software in metric for an imperial race, Haas forgot how to replace wheels, and McLaren finished fifth.

The most predictable element of the race was ESPN repeatedly butchering the broadcast in the US.

I watched it on catch-up and found myself fast-forwarding through chunks of it. The halo doesn't look as bad as I thought it might, though.

Red Bull definitely still have work to do (as per usual). Bottas's weak start to the weekend worked against Hamilton since Ferrari were able to treat it as two against one, with Kimi pitting early and Vettel staying out longer. Hamilton couldn't match them both, as it were, and the safety car effectively gave Vettel a loss-free stop.

There seemed to be a lot more onscreen data, or at least it seemed to be onscreen for more of the time. Tempted to suggest that's an impact of Formula E and/or Indycar.

All four Renault engines in the top ten, incidentally.

Five overtakes in the Australian GP. Hmmm. Brawn knows there is a problem and basically the cars are all a bit too good. The aggressive looking cars that came in last year can get superb lap times but can't get wheel to wheel because of their down force and aerodynamics.

Meanwhile the first IndyCar race was at the other end of the spectrum. A record 366 passes at St Pete, which could end up being more than F1 has in the entire year.

              Andretti weighs in.

Thierry Neuville ended up under a bridge in testing ahead of WRC Tour de Corse next weekend. Both driver and co-driver are unhurt, remarkably.

The safety cells in the new world rally cars are incredible these days, a world apart from the Group B days - or indeed a MkII Escort, even one kitted out with modern cage and belts, as my mate found out 2 weeks ago when his day out navigating on a club rally finished with a trip in the air ambulance and a week in hospital while they pinned his leg back together.

In other rally news, leading young British hope Chris Ingram had a good 4th place finish (behind two local stars and endearing Russian lunatic Alexey Lukyanuk) on the opening round of the European Rally Championship last week, the spectacular Rally Azores.

BTCC kicks off this weekend at Brands, with the usual extensive coverage on ITV4. Having not really kept my eye on the entry list, I'm surprised to see Tom Boardman back (in an MG) - I've always had a soft spot for him as I used to watch him race junior ministox at my local stock car track.

WRC is also back, on the unpredictable mountain roads of Corsica. Wouldn't like to predict a winner, Ogier or Neuville would be the obvious choice but the Citroens should be quick and Elfyn Evans has gone well here before, though co-driver Dan Barritt is still absent after his concussion in Mexico so 2003 World Champion Phil Mills sits in.

It's quite the full weekend. As well as BTCC and WRC, there's the Bahrain F1 GP, Indycar in Phoenix, Nascar in Texas and Moto GP in Argentina.

(But the number one sporting event this weekend for me is motor-free... we hope...)

Ha ha, both McLarens outqualified in Bahrain by the Toro Rossos with their Honda engines. Better news for them earlier in the day when Lando Norris won the F2 race. Mercedes forgot to turn their qualifying engine mode on and Ferrari lock out the front row, which is even worse for Hamilton as a grid penalty for a gearbox change means he'll start all the way down in ninth. Now I'd like to request Paris - Roubaix finishes before the race starts, preferably also in time to hear the magnificent Bahraini national anthem.

Valentino Rossi accuses Marc Marquez of deliberately crashing into riders - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/motorsport/43695910

A very eventful MOTO GP in Argentina yesterday, the conditions weren't great but the track had a clear dry line after the previous races and warm ups.

Then there was a shower and only Jack Miller was brave or foolish enough to go for slicks. This was partly because he'd qualified on slicks on a very damp track the previous day. The rest of the grid slowly disappeared leaving Miller alone on the grid with the start eventually delayed.

It was shambolic as the team managers bullied the race organisers into this decision. They gave Miller a 50m head start.

After the sighting lap Marc Marquez stalled his bike on the grid but instead of starting from the pit lane he rode back up the grid and resumed his place.

                                        This was farcical.

After receiving a ride through penalty he then embarked on a heroic mission to claim points. Unfortunately he rode like a maniac and caused at least two accidents, one of which left Rossi on the turf and out of the points.

All of this takes away from a fantastic race where four private teams did battle and Cal Crutchlow won to become the first British rider to lead the world championship since Barry Sheene in 79.

Great race in Bahrain and a deserved win for Ferrari, but by far the most exciting news to emerge from the meeting is that Formula 1 is getting a mascot by the name of Axel with full details to be revealed in China this weekend. Pity the poor sod who has to wear the costume in Hungary / Singapore / Mexico etc.

Hamilton looking good in practice. Pirelli have left a gap in compounds for this race, so there's more of a decision to make in terms of performance vs degradation.

Rome has its first ePrix tomorrow, on 5 Spike from 1430. And IndyCar goes to Long Beach on Sunday.

Do the US OTFers know if there is an appetite for extending the Indy season? It seems to finish earlier than most other motorsports and I reckon they should have 3-4 more races in September-October. I fancy the Daytona road track, Laguna Seca and COTA fwiw...

All to do for Hamilton again with a Ferrari lockout on the front row for the second time in a row. He's fourth on the grid, with Bottas third.

Meanwhile another series has started up this weekend - world rallycross (WRX). Here's a taste of what's been happening in Barcelona today.

Excellent race today, and pleased to see Ricciardo win it. Shame Kimi didn't quite have enough to get past Bottas at the end, but considering he spent the whole of the race up to the safety car being dumped on by his teammate I was pleased he was able to take advantage of the chaos and recover. Max Verstappen might be world champion some day but he'll have to become a much duller racer to do it.
