A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to be invited to a track day organised by Group B MG Metro 6R4 enthusiasts, 6R4.net

Although the cars were mostly Metros (including this ex-Colin McRae Donegal car - the one that was being used in this classic video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGaaONMagp0 )

there were also some other nice rally classics zipping around. Full gallery of my pics if anyone is interested https://flic.kr/s/aHsmiqRcZf

Those are fabulous pics. Great weather for it, too.

Particularly amused by the Escort that wants to be a Stratos, at least it seems to me.

Cheers Kev, yes it was a lovely day - although that did bring the bugs out.

Which one do you mean - the actual Escort, or the RS200?

        Comment

Ah, the RS200 then, car #165. So that's how they were supposed to look then... Honestly thought it was an Escort with a Lancia body kit on!

Yes, the RS200 was Ford's rather radical and short-lived attempt at a Group B supercar - there's a short potted history here http://www.evo.co.uk/features/10042/...984-ford-rs200 which makes me feel old as I realised I was there watching it's debut in 1985! The bit that always made me laugh was the body shells being produced by Reliant, which in the mid 80s was mostly famous for providing Del Boy with transport and Jasper Carrott with jokes.

[Nb - You'll note from the photos and a bit of YouTubing that a highly modified version has been used with some success at Pikes Peak.]

              Thanks TRL!

Heikki Kovalainen appears to be in Super GT these days, racing a Lexus with Kobayashi (Button races it too, in a Honda). Here's last weekend's higlights.

edit - bloody hell, just found a video of an RS200 doing a hill run last year where its bonnet flew off!

And in Japan's open-wheel series (Super Formula - no messing about with names from the Japanese. Super Formula and Super GT. You know what you're getting) they are doing the shakedown of the car to be used in 2019 in Fuji. The current car is in its fourth and final season.

Here it is in black testing livery. No halo but apparently there are some cockpit safety enhancements.

The wet tyres getting a good test, too.

Quite apart from the shark fin, that looks like it's got a dolphin for a sidepod.

Good spot! Maybe this was the inspiration?

Mercedes out on top in FP1 this morning but Ferrari usually sandbag the early sessions.

Additional DRS zone around the start/finish straight into Abbey....

                          Grosjean went into the barrier.

Away from the F1, terrible news that William Dunlop - son of Robert and nephew of Joey - has been killed in practice for the Skerries 100 road race in Ireland yesterday.

Fuck. Motorcycle road races never cease to amaze me - it's ten years since Toseland wrote this about Robert and Joey.

Did we enjoy the British Grand Prix, then? I thought it was a great race - I might be biased but Silverstone is just such a fabulous track. Possible to pass and do battle if you're on your game but takes no prisoners if you're off it.

Ah shit - just seen this. Terrible news indeed, especially as he didn't compete in this years TT to be be with his pregnant partner following issues with the 20-week scan. Always seemed a lot more laidback than Michael and came over as a genuinely nice bloke.

This weekend sees the start of the second half of the WRC season with the ‘Gravel Grand Prix’ from Finland. The super special is live on BT Sport as I’m typing this, but the serious stuff begins tomorrow. My money is on Tanak to blow the title protagonists away, but there’s probably half a dozen drivers capable of the win.

Not in the pink - Force India in administration.

                                          (makes occasional visit into thread)

That would be the Mark Rennison car which won the GB Rallycross Championship in the late 80s. Rennison had the better domestically of Will Gollop in his 6R4, but Gollop won the European championship in his BiTurbo 6R4.

That was unbelievable watching at the time. Other RS200 trivia: The back lights were taken directly from a production Ford Sierra. From the looks of that pic, it is a straight RS200, there were Evo and Evo 2 versions which upped the engine from 1.8l to 2.3l. Even then it wasn't really quick enough to hold off a Peugeot 205 T16 E2. That was a very, very fast car.

Terrible quality video because it is 1987 and winter and getting very late.

Good stuff Snake, with that sort of knowledge you should pop into this thread more often.

When I lived in Cumbria I was semi-regular at Croft rallycross and I saw Rennison progress from a RWD MK3 Escort into the RS200 just as he was developing into a top driver.

Nikki Lauda has had an emergency lung transplant in Vienna. The hospital has said the operation was a success, but he isn't out of the woods.

Renault have pulled off a surprise move by signing Daniel Ricciardo for next year. That chucks the driver market up in the air a lot - it had been assumed that Esteban Ocon would be getting that drive and it had been suggested the transfer might even take place in the summer break given Force India's financial troubles. Sainz had been expected to go to McLaren but might now get the promotion to the senior Red Bull team, or they might end up having to promote Pierre Gasly which could be premature.
