A thread to celebrate the wonder of all things British made.

I don't suppose it's still made in Scotland from girders? Health and safety and pc gone mad.

Fae Girders currently sponsors the Scottish plus Guests Challenge Cup. This term's last 4 include Welshmen that play in England and Ulster's Palestinian tribute act. Inverness here we come

The 'big' Asda in Carlisle is reportedly the biggest seller of Irn Bru outside Scotland, what with it being approx. six miles from the border and the most convenient big supermarket for a fair chunk of D&G and the Borders. You can also count on it for decent stocks of lorne sausage, tatty scones and other delights. Once they bring in minimum pricing for alcohol in Scotland they'll need to clear some space, or extend it, Calais-style.

Yep, was put wise to Carlisle Asda by my sister's in-laws, who hail from Langholm on the Scottish side of the border. It's ideal for mrs b and myself to do a big shop on our way back down to London after having been in Scotland for Hogmanay.

                  Sorry, as you were.

Yes, I think there's loads of 'passing' Scottish trade off the motorway, in both directions. Our local Lidl (East Newcastle) started off with scotch pies, lorne etc but soon dropped them. Regional 'Northern' distrib centre, I s'pose. I regret the loss of their big rye loaves more (not enough Poles).

My cousins in Carlisle seem most taken with Irn Bru.

That and the Tesco at the next junction down are like de facto motorway services and a lot of people stop off on the way up or down, it's not all just the citizens of Ecclefechan et al. [or, what FIGS said].

                        Apologies for the tangent everyone.

Don't tell Stewart Lee, but I first had, and still marginally prefer, the Hip Priest And Kamerads semi-comp rather than the full HEH.

Has that got Room to Live and I’m into CB! on it? Cos then I’d be very close to agreeing with you. It was about the first Fall cassette I heard, along with Bend Sinister (it mightn’t be great but I still like the dark psychedelic British Grenadiers thing) and TNSG.

It has, and Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul too.

Bend Sinister is actually my favourite Fall album. Partly a time and place thing but it still works for me. Brix And The Extricated do US 80s-90s live, which I'll take over the current version of the mothership, even when the show can go on. MES looked absolutely fucked in the photos from the last few shows they did manage.

If any Dublin otf types know of shops selling cans of Irn Bru, I’d be very grateful. The plastic bottles are somehow a bit shit.

Same thing happens to Tanora in plastic bottles. Unfortunately they don't sell it in cans or glass bottles anymore.

Never even heard of Tanora till now. But I guess North Tipp is hardly Munster, and the rest is Terra Incognito for me, mostly.

Appears to be a Cork thing, unsurprisingly

Good grief, Tanora sounds horrible, even to someone quite partial to Vimto.

In terms of reach, or lack of, it could be the North Staffordshire oatcake of carbonated drinks.

Red lemonade is 80% similar to Irn-Bru IMHO.
The former is available in glass bottles still?
