Weird crash in the bunch from what looked like a touch of wheels on a tarmac road - Kristoff, Rowe, Martin all came down heavily.

Sagan and pals up to a minute's lead now, though the time gaps are oscillating so wildly I'm not entirely sure whether to trust them. Expect Sagan will make a big move to distance his companions on the Carrefour de l'Arbre if he hasn't got rid of them by then.

Wallays got dropped a while back, but Sylvain Dillier is still with Sagan. Dillier rocked and rolled over the cobbles on the Carrefour de l'Arbre but he stayed upright.

              Woot!

And over to C4, where the Red Bulls are buggered.

Today was a Peter Sagan day.

Hell of a ride from Dillier

Not sure I've seen Sagan this euphoric after a win recently.

Always thought Sagan would never win Paris Roubaix, that the race didn't quite suit the way he deploys his power and he always gets heavily marked. He didn't really attack there, rather drifted off the front when GVA got brought back from a similar move and everyone let him go. Very impressive from Dillier to get second after being in the morning break. What a terrific race.

                          Awful news. Only 23.

Edit - just look at the kick he got out of the Ronde. This was his last tweet.

This sport can be so cruel, and also so wonderful.

I realise this is a rather dull administrative point, but I see Siskevicius is recorded on the result sheet as being an abandon rather than outside the time limit. That suggests he was so far behind they'd taken the finish equipment down, bit surprised he wasn't pulled out of the race on that basis.

Vuelta wild cards got announced this morning - Burgos BH, Caja Rural, Cofidis, Euskadi Murias. No place for Aqua Blue Sport on that basis even though they won a stage last year. Cofidis are there again mind despite the fact their most recent stage win in the race was Dani Navarro in 2014. I'm sure the fact that Cofidis sponsor the event as a whole is a complete coincidence.

Yeah, it's not an official finish for Siskevicius; I wonder if he can appeal that and get it changed to OTL? On route to the finish, he also had to take matters into his own hands to sort out a puncture.

First season at step 2 for Euskadi Murias, but no surprise to see them given a place at La Vuelta. Still, missing out on all three GTs is a big blow for Aqua Blue Sport, who made real strides last year; the Cofidis shambles is really taking the piss now. Grrr.

The domestic road racing season has its first big event of 2018 this coming Sunday, with Lancashire's Chorley GP kicking off the Spring Cup (men only - boo, hiss to Chorley and/or British Cycling).

All indications are that Goolaerts went into cardiac arrest while on the bike and that it was the cause of the crash rather than the other way around.

He also seems to have never regained consciousness, so at least his suffering was minimal.

Cofidis' wide distribution of sponsorship Euros (races, adverts in the sporting press and on televised races, etc.) in France, Italy and Spain is not unrelated to their continued presence in the peloton.

Bah, but ES are not showing it this year. Oh well, here's some live text updates. In French.

Lilian (but you can) Call Me Jane has apparently attacked with around 27km to go. A solo winner of a TdF stage last year, of course.

The peloton sounds to be too far back. Edet, Laskurain and Guillaume Martin have counterattacked.

9km to go. Will he hold on for the cheese?

Ben Thomas (FDJ), who is apparently not Welsh, also attacks. Peloton isn't bringing these moves back.
