Isn't Root a "true batting talent"?

In fairness, if he's enough of a better captain than Root, and if Root will go back to his old form if he stops being captain (and they're both pretty big ifs), then it's not that bad an idea. I like James Vince, as I see a lot of him at county level, so I'm trying to say this as nicely as possible, but I don't think Morgan would score fewer runs than him, so in that scenario the positives would outweigh the negatives.

Apologies for confusion, I did mean Root in my earlier post. Agree that as a stopgap Morgan would be a decent alternative if Root did decide/has it decided for him to no longer be captain. Bit like a return to the Mike Brearley days.

Australia give the captaincy to their best batsman and expect him to cope. It usually works but not always. England often look for captaincy experience at county level but central contracts have scuppered that.
I would have thought that England's last two captains, Strauss and Cook, could have mentored Root in some way. For whatever reason the transition seems to have gone wrong.

"Batsman Ben Duckett was dropped from England's Ashes tour game on Saturday following an incident in a Perth bar ... On Thursday, he was socialising with the Lions and members of the senior squad, whose curfew imposed earlier in the tour had been lifted that day." (BBC, and all other media outlets soon, and all day no doubt).
The "incident" sounds pretty minor, but as usual we get the PR idiocy of "it's no big deal, therefore he's punished". FFS, either laugh it off or don't let them out in the first place. Saying "you can go out in public and drink but don't do anything that young men who go out and drink ever do" doesn't seem to be a very workable plan. Hopeless.

England’s Ben Duckett dropped for pouring drink over Jimmy Anderson in bar

Stupid and unnecessary but surely ask overreaction to drop him or possibly stone him home.

England win the toss and will bat, which is their only plausible option. The only way I could see them taking 20 wickets is if they intimidate Australia with a very big score.
Cricinfo thinks a draw is odds on (flat pitch plus heavy rain on days 4-5) but the bookies have the draw at around 5-2, which is worth taking. England win is very doubtful; extremely doubtful if it rains heavily.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 14-12-2017, 02:20.

Very impressive from both those two in that partnership. Especially dealing with the new ball at the end of the day. Malan has surprised a lot of people (me very much included). Stoneman has looked OK too. Vince, on the other hand, not so much.
At 150 - 4 I felt I was being optimistic wondering if they could reach 300.
