    Kurds away!

It has passed under the radar in the European media to date, but it appears virtually certain that Iraqi Kurdistan will declare independence from Baghdad on Monday week, following the formalities of a referendum. Ankara is naturally opposed, but one presumes that both the US and UK will ultimately recognise the new state.

I'm guessing Iran will also oppose this move. Israel is heavily involved there already. I can't see this being anything other than another bloodbath.

This. My friends in Erbil are incredibly concerned about the future.

Possible mad Turkish Iranian alliance, Israel as at least a supplier of arms to the Kurds, Saudis and Gulf States all over the place in agitation and fluster, sweet Jesus.

Virtually identical to the Catalan situation - presumably Barzani will similarly turn a blind eye?

Message from friend in Erbil trying to get to heavily pregnant wife in NZ: "Iran just closed its airspace to all flights to/from Erbil. Stuck".

The flight routes over the middle east get ever more complex. This morning I flew from Doha to Bucharest, which involves flying over Iran (as Saudi has closed airspace to Qatar). I can envisage a day before long when there are two routes. One which flies over countries of coalition of cunts number 1 - KSA, Israel, Egypt, and one which flies over coalition of cunts number 2 - Turkey, Iran and Qatar

Actually that probably already happens doesn't it?

If Iran and Turkey both close their airspace to Erbil (as seems plausible) there's pretty much no way out is there?

What can he do, he's stuck between Iraq and a Kurd place.

He's hopeful that it's just a referendum precaution. But it's true that it's getting harder for airlines to plot their way through the middle east.

Iran, Turkey and Iraq have all closed their land borders with the region.

Iraq closing its "borders" with a part of Iraq which wants to break away in order to demonstrate that it shouldn't do so, seems somewhat perverse

According to the radio this morning only Israel supports this. Says enough that.

Turkey has long had a good trading relationship with the KRG so I'm sure they'll come to economic arrangement if they need to. All that oil has to come out somewhere.

78% turnout, reports of 80% Yes result, but that won't be confirmed for a few days. Iraq and Turkey are planning joint military manoeuvres, according to Al Jazeera.

This is a deeply worrying development.

Iraqi army clashes with Kurds in operation to 'impose security' on Kirkuk

Kirkuk is a multicultural, multilingual city that contains four ethnic groups who all claim deep historical roots there. I wouldn't assume that the Kurds had totally honorable intentions when they took it over. OTOH Iraqi government intentions are unlikely to be ethnically inclusive.

Oil and an air base make it a rich prize, too.

US is worried that a war lets ISIS back in but that should be the least of their worries if they have a brain and compassion.

Looking like they'll give up on Kirkuk and draw a line in the sand somewhere else.
