I think there's a good chance neither Barca nor Real are going to make the last 8, for about the first time since the Spanish Civil War

    Or 2006-07 in new money.

Madrid were eliminated by Bayern in the Round of 16, while Barcelona fell to some club called Liverpool, with both ties settled on away goals.

Then again, we may be closer to a reprise of the Spanish Civil War than many think.

Barcelona and Real have spent a shitload of money to try to ensure that last 16 elimination cannot happen, but they have drawn two clubs who have also spent shitloads. Spurs might find Juventus in February harder to beat than Real in November.

Sevilla: please, please beat Man U, although it's a very tall order.

There are few ties that sum up the utterly toxic, disheartening excuse for a competition the Champions League has become more than Real Madrid versus PSG.

At least it means one of them gets fucked out earlier than one would expect.

Real madrid were eliminated in the second round of the cl from 2004-5 to 2009-10. That last season was the season when they spent all that money on all those players. All of this stuff is very cyclical. Teams transitioning from one team to another really struggle in europe. Many of Real Madrid's key signings date from that period and they're all now 30 and above, so they're going to struggle (maybe not this year) but soon.
