    Sports with the most posts

Would you like to guess which sport regularly has the most posts each year? Even after getting some of the numbers, I'm still not sure. On the face of it, it's Baseball. But I think that Tennis, Cricket, Rugby U and Cycling have a shout.

In the case of Cricket, there are myriad threads, as to be expected in a game which has three formats, domestic and international matches, and is arranged both in competitions/tournaments and one-off series.

Cycling and Tennis are similar in that there are Tour events covered in a main thread, and then a few major events over the year that warrant their own thread. These two were also accused of thread doping last year, each running a rolling thread over 2014, 2015 and 2016. They've both started annual threads again this year and the big threads have had their totals divided by three to produce an Annual Equivalent Rate (the same has been done with International Cricket). However the 2014-2016 Tennis thread is the longest one in this forum.

Rugby U seems in the past to have followed that mould, with separate threads for Lions, World Cups and Six Nations scattered in the depths of these pages. But when it was all brought under one roof in 2015 we saw the single biggest annual thread in the Sports forum by some distance.

So perhaps further work needs to be done to try to aggregate some sports. But if you want some raw data to look at (and at some point perhaps I'll go further down), here are those with annual rates of 250 or above.

edit - nah - had wondered aloud whether a 'Cricket 2018' thread would work, but I can't see that it would.

I'm pretty sure that the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup would have been the biggest single sporting event thread, overtaking London 2012. I'd estimate that around 1500 of the posts in the RU15 thread are related to the World Cup. Amazing scenes.

Top Single Non-Football Sporting events on OTF:

      Rugby U World Cup 2015 c1500
      Olympics/Paralympics 2012 1336
      Olympics/Paralympics 2016 1262
      The Ashes 2009 982
      Tour de France 2015 806
      Cricket World Cup 2011 797

Is "Olympics" a single sport though. That category should be divided by the number of different sports involved.

Thanks Ray. It was good fun - though I might need to re-check the College Football threads to see if I have the annual rates correct, by cross referencing them to the season dates. (The big differential between seasons is odd.)

I was musing on why the 2015 edition of the TdF was the biggest one on here so far, and can think of a few reasons that stack up:

              • Froome had only won the 2013 edition at this point and was not the defending champion, having crashed out in 2014 - so he didn't seem a shoe-in
              • The top four riders were all competing in the same race
              • Toro was still around - Mother Teresa Gate happened in December 2015 - and a lot of sports threads (especially cycling and Rugby U) have suffered since he left

Me too. I was seriously trying to add up the corner flags and goal-posts in Rugby, Aussie Rules, hockey, hurling and lacrosse.

Without checking I'd assume the 2005 Ashes must have had 1500+ on the old board. Longest continuous event of high interest I can recall, although I was posting at The Guardian site that year.

Oof, there's a gauntlet. Ashes 2007 had 942, so I'll be there in a minute...

So, taking 2015 for example, I can aggregate by using the filters now:

                                          Tennis
                                          Tennis (Wimbledon) 2015 387
                                          Tennis (Aus Open) 2015 315
                                          Tennis (French Open) 2015 294
                                          Tennis (Davis/Fed) 2015 279
                                          Tennis (US Open) 2015 234
                                          Tennis (main) 2014-2016 972
                                          Total 2015 Tennis = 2481 (wow)

                                          Cycling
Cycling (Tour de France) 2015 806
                                          Cycling (Giro d'Italia) 2015 141
                                          Cycling (Vuelta, ToB) 2015 92
                                          Cycling (main) 2014-2016 562
                                          Total 2015 Cycling = 1601

Cricket beats Cycling - at the moment they add up to 1600 but there are some other small threads for overseas series in 2015 that need to be added in.

You two should worry; I thought at first it said Sports with the most poets, which was a bit of a boggler I can tell you.

On that note, we can now apparently list Formula One as hosting at least one poet, after discovering from another thread this evening about Lewis Hamilton's stunningly, erm, unexpected ode to Princess Diana. Blimey.

Right, happy with the spreadsheet now, for the post-move-to-WSC iterations of the message board. I've gone down to cover seasons/events with 20 or more posts, which would represent one page on the WSC board. Threads on individuals, controversies, rules, trivia etc have not been included.

This means I can say that the Cricket total for 2015 is in the region of 1731, and for some reason there were two threads on the World Cup. Perhaps one went a bit early (garnering the minimum 20 to qualify).

So the 2015 league table was:

                                                2481 Tennis
                                                2098 Rugby U
                                                1731 Cricket
                                                1601 Cycling
                                                950 Gridiron (NFL+College Football)
                                                823 Baseball
                                                345 Ice hockey
                                                300 Basketball
                                                283 Rugby League
                                                234 Speedway
                                                232 Athletics
                                                181 GAA
                                                135 Snooker
                                                116 Horse racing
                                                103 Golf
                                                97 Boxing
                                                38 Formula 1
                                                34 Darts
                                                27 Field hockey
                                                4 Indoor bowls*

And I suspect we've had some moves up and down since then.

                                                * Indoor bowls has a rolling (ha!) thread with 24 posts over six editions. I might have missed some other sports with slightly smaller counts for 2015.
