In fact the draw of which winner goes to which top 8 side is known already - Pordenone will face Inter at the Meazza on 12 December. Cittadella will go to Lazio.

The other confirmed ties so far are Fiorentina v Sampdoria and Atalanta v Sassuolo.

The complete draw was done in the summer.

It is a seriously crap competition.

I wonder if the demise of the Cup Winners' Cup had anything to do with the encrapment of the Coppa Italia? Three different Italian teams - Samp, Parma and Lazio - won it in its final decade, the 1990s. So back then cup competition was presumably taken more seriously. The Coppa itself included the big boys early on playing two-legged ties.

But then again, there were only 18 teams in Serie A, so fewer league games played.

So, this happened in that game. Or nearly happened, if you like.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic is the younger brother of Lazio's Sergej. He's only 20 and this was his first senior appearance for Torino. Oh yes, and he's a goalkeeper.

Magnificent strike and so unlucky. It deserves a thread of its own imho.

I'd quite like just to keep it as a gem for anyone who wanders in to the Calcio thread. But yeah, a Bale-esque hit from the young 'keeper.

Before the Veronese derby, by the way, the captains exchanged wine for a pandoro.

Oh, and Udinese 8-3 Perugia was a result today. But Genoa just needed one goal to get past Crotone.

So here's where we are for the last 16. The semi finals are two legged, as with the EFL Cup I suppose, but the next round and quarter finals have the first team at home. The next round's matches are spread out over a couple of midweeks in mid-December.

Juventus likely to move to just one point away from Napoli, 1-0 up in the big game tonight.

Not a bad way to get your club's first ever point in the top flight.

                      Not bad at all

Not a good weekend for the Milan clubs. Last week Inter were laughing as all their rivals failed to take advantage of their 0-0 draw at Juve, but this weekend their luck ran out. Deservedly beaten 3-1 by Udinese at the Meazza, Napoli, Roma & Juve weren't going to pass up on this one and all won.

Meanwhile Milan decided that they too needed to hog the headlines by getting humiliated 3-0 at Hellas Verona. I really hope Vincenzo Montella pissed himself laughing when he saw that result.

So, James Richardson is now doing an Italian Football podcast called Golazzo.

I hadn't even realised there was a Football League one either.

The first two episodes have been quite good, largely due to Marcotti's stories.

                                      Giornata 23

Napoli did enough to maintain their place at the top of Serie A with the forward line of Mertens, Hamsik and Insigne once again conjuring up some gorgeous football at Benevento. Mertens' lob is glorious. But Juventus strike a huge psychological blow by thrashing Sassuolo 7-0. Lazio suffered a surprise reverse but Inter failed tp punish them, drawing once again.

But what we now have are some excellent dogfights for the remaining 15 games. A genuine title contest - far, far closer than in England, Spain, Germany and France, with Napoli in a great position to end Juve's monopoly on the Scudetto. Then there is Champions League qualification up for grabs - Italy going up to four places again - likely between Roma, Lazio and Inter.

Notwithstanding that, the relegation battle is pretty open too, with the exception of the surely-doomed Benevento.

                                        Is this thing on?

Er, yeah, Napoli have choked. Six points behind Juventus now and a midweek round of fixtures, starting with Inter who are currently 3-0 up against Cagliari into the last half an hour. This win will put them up to third, two points ahead of Roma and Lazio who have matches tomorrow (Roma v Genoa, Fiorentina v Lazio). The race for the third and fourth places and CL qualification should be a hot one.

Fiorentina v Lazio is 1-0 with both sides already down to ten. Roma lead Genoa so are third in the live table, with Inter fourth.

And La Viola just added a second from the spot - penalty was borderline tbh.

So, following Napoli's comeback to win against Udinese and Juventus only drawing at Crotone, Juve have a four point lead before hosting Napoli in Torino on Sunday night.

The two teams' run-ins after the top of the table clash are:

                                              Juventus
                                              at Inter
                                              Bologna
                                              at Roma
                                              Hellas Verona

                                              Napoli
                                              at Fiorentina
                                              Torino
                                              at Sampdoria
                                              Crotone

By the way, Lazio host Inter on the last day of the season, with it looking increasingly likely that automatic qualification for the Champions League will be up for grabs.

Midweek Serie A always seems to deliver. What a superb round of matches.

Benevento are as good as down now; one more dropped point for them or a point gained for Spal seals their fate.

Napoli have 30 minutes to keep the title race alive, though Juve have looked the more likely to score so far.

Buffon makes a great save from Callejon to keep it at 0-0. Decent game.
